Thinking about upgrading my 2500hd to a 3500hd. Something around a 2010 or a 2011 would by 6 liter gas,4x4,extended cab a 8ft box for better camper choices,Thinking something like a 9'-6 Bigfoot as we do a lot of sking etc.Thinking about Alaska and across Canada.Trying to get a straight answer on what it can carry legally for a camper. My 2500hd says 2200lb in the glove box sticker and we are close to my Gvw of 9200lbs when my old 8ft is on it with the dog and wife. and its is real old school basic.Somebody out there as one for sure. Thanks

I have been to BC and never got hasseled but my cousin is from Alberta and goes fishing in BC all summer and he has seen them doing inspections on TC's, he says they just set up and start pulling them over and weighing them.

That is my understanding.

Curious as to how you would know that? I have been to BC with my truck and TC, never even questioned. Door sticker compared to my actual weight, I am about 1600 lbs over.

I agree, and think it is pretty clear.

It can be done!

Don't forget that the OP is in British Columbia, Canada, where the door sticker is the law, and they do pull over RVs and weigh them.

If this "4k payload" you speak of is due to clever math with the axle ratings, then it won't fly in BC.

To the OP: Easiest thing to do is look at the door sticker of the truck you're interested in. That is how much you can legally carry in BC.

GVW is related to brakes, frame, and carrying capacity. To ignore it completely is foolish.

My 2011 Ram 3500 Dually had a 12,200 GVW.
My new 2016 Ram 3500 Dually has a 14K GVW.

Huge changes in the frame, suspension and axles between the two.
Also the brakes on the new truck are way way way better.

GVW is a number fabricated for tax/fee purpose and is VERY loosely related to vehicle capabilities.
Use actual axle ratings for real life calculations.

This is wrong. GVW is not a number pulled out of thin air for tax purposes.

Quote from press intro for 2011 Chevy HD's

What's changed underneath? A better question is what hasn't? The front stabilizer bar link that connects the stabilizer bar to the lower control arm is carried over from the 2007-10 HD pickup. That's it.

Hardly just a frame.

My bad, it is 11,400. I just checked my door frame sticker.
I think I got "200" stuck in my head because that's a pre-2010 2500HD is: 9200.

Not sure on the Chevys, but my 15 Ram 3500 SRW is just a few hundred lbs less GVW than my 03 DRW.
The 3500 Ram LB SRW has a GVW of 12,300 and over 4k lbs payload.
You should have many options.

If loading your TC takes weight off of the front axle, your CG is incorrect. It will have a negative impact on your steering, how negative depends on how much weight is removed from the front axle.

My Fleetwood seems to be a bit unique with holding tanks under rear bumper and generator and propane tanks in the rear as well.
Also I put the trailer 16" behind the cabin to have cargo space.
Obviously I am not driving with full holding tanks very often and diesel engine is giving enough load on front axle to not create problems.
Still something you should remember when loading TC.
