Golf Cart Batteries

I purchased 2 brand new golf cart batteries from Costco last year. They have been sitting in my garage all winter and I am getting ready to head out camping in two weeks. I am looking for advice on charging these batteries. I am going to head out to purchase a decent charger - any suggestions? Once I have the charger, in what fashion would I best charge these batteries? I have a cheaper Motomaster charger that has worked reasonably well on my deep cycle but I think it's time to move up. Any advice would be really great. Thanks

Dan
  • Welcome to the forum.

FWIW the management frowns on multiple posting of the same thing.

Don't you have a converter/charger in your RV?

Either use a six volt charger or connect them in series and charge with a 12v charger.

It is also a good idea to have a signature line or profile so we know what you have. It helps in answering questions.
  • Update your converter or even better get 100+ watts of solar.

Otherwise if motomaster puts out 20+ amps it is fine.
  • The charger is not as important as how you maintain the batteries. As was suggested, connect them in series and any decent 12-volt charger with a deep-cycle setting will do. I have a couple of chargers I bought from Sears. I also have a Schumacher I bought at an auto store. Make sure that the batteries are fully charged when you put the unit away after a trip. If it is going to be stored more than a couple of weeks, put the batteries on a trickle charger. Check the electrolyte level often. I check mine once a month. I also keep a desulfator connected to my golf carts when they are in storage.

  • You need to get a "smart charger" those old fashioned chargers will end up overcharging you battery. Walmart has a black and decker smart charger thats pretty good, and not too expensive. Get the highest amperage you can afford. I have the 45 amp and it works good and can get my batteries up from almost deat to 80% in 2 to 3 hours. I like mine.
