My 98.5 Ram 2500 yanks my Jayco around effortlessly. 3.55s, full Banks kit at 273K miles. 2600 on the pin, 9000 on the axles with bags. I would've bought a DRW but couldn't find one worth having. I'd find the 5er you want and pull it with your 01 before making a decision. Your truck will sell FAST if you decide to go that way after pulling.
12V98 is right, these trucks bring big money. Certainly don't trade it unless to a private party that has a truck you want and they want your truck and you can agree on the difference.

Thank God you don't have a half ton or you would be ripped to shreds. Don't you know they are barely serviceable even if you only go to 80% of what they are rated...?

OP, I would venture a guess that your truck has pretty much seen all the depreciation that its going to. If the body is solid and the engine and trans are strong, that truck will hold most of its current value for the next 5 years. Then in 2020 you can either go out and buy a brand new 2020 model truck with bells and whistles not even available yet or you can buy a 5 year old 2015 or anything in between. By then you will have a better idea of what 5er you might want to buy and can get an appropriate truck at that time.

If you have the itch right now (trust me, I know the feeling), then there is likely nothing wrong with buying a new truck now. Interest rates are low and a 2015 will be a massive upgrade over your 2001. In 5 years the cost of a similarly equipped model truck will likely be higher than it is now, so you could potentially argue that you are saving money buying it at today's price.

If it were me and my money, I would research the cost of a new truck and figure out what your payments would be for a 5 year loan. Then I would start a specific savings account at the bank/credit union and pay myself those truck payments over the next 5 years. In 5 years I would buy that truck CASH and walk into retirement with as little debt as possible.

Either way, congrats and I hope you enjoy retirement and a new truck and 5er! I am 12.5 years away from my retirement age myself. If all goes well, July 21, 2027 will be my last day and I will only be 46 years old!!!

That's a very sought after truck! 5 years down the road you will get about the same money as now even with some more miles.

Hard decision...that's the same boat we were in. Even our mileage, ours is 73,500 in a 2001. Everybody's different but we decided to keep the old thing. We already paid tax on it when we bought it and resale value not that good and didn't want to pay tax again. Tax doesn't sound like much till you add it up. But YES!!! We would like the new 27 5L. They are sweet...But don't want to spend the money.

Looked and looked and found a 2013 25W Arctic Fox (TT) that was used maybe 4 times by a couple that trades them in every 2 years. Here is the posting, you can see the weights if interested.

Our truck should have a lot more miles left in her.

(I would say other great things about her but won't being I spent the day messing with the anti-rattle clips on the brakes pads 🙂

What are you looking at TT or 5er?
What options did your 2001 Ram have, towing? Camper? 4.10's you can pull a house!!!
I tow 11,000# with our 01, with 3.55's without issue. Yes over that very conservative 8,800# GVWR, all I can say is at 278,000 mile this truck loves yo tow. The Arctic Fox have very high payloads so I would pull an AF with a GVWR of 15K for sure.

I think he meant GCWR. I'm surprised how low these trucks were rated back then. My 2005 F250 had a 9800 lb GVWR, 23,000 lb GCWR and 15,000 lb fifth wheel tow rating. I'm sure my new truck will also get passed by newer models as manufacturers leap frog for the top rating.

I recently up-sized my truck prior to buying a heavier RV. I knew I would not be able to afford upgrading both at the same time and what I wanted was currently affordable for me. I was able to sell to my previous vehicle after 10 years with 110K miles and no issues for more than the online pricing guides, so I was fine making the upgrade now. In three to five years, we will start seriously evaluating replacements for our current camper knowing we have the truck already in place to handle what we want.

If you are not paying cash for it, buy it now and pay it off before retirement. just don't wear it out in the mean time.

In 5 years they might be up to a 1000 lbs of torque.

Do you plan to buy the trailer now or in 5 years? Sorry, I don't see a problem.

Buy a new truck today and you will probably buy again in 5 years anyway.

I would wait. You may fall in love with a different truck when it comes time to tow... Drive what you have until you get the new fifth wheel...
