Had a problem with one of my BFG Commercial TA's

Last fall while camped at a lake I noticed one of the E rated commercial TA's I put on the trailer a few years ago didn't look quite right but of course it slipped my mind by the time we left the lake. Luckily the tire was on the driver's side and I noticed it again while dumping my tanks before the long drive home.

Went to a tire shop for a second opinion and the guy agreed with me, it looked like the belts were separating. I put my spare on, also a 225/75R16 Commercial TA

So the tires are a few years old but they only have 2/32nds worn off of them. Costco had the Duravis 250's on for a good price last year but of course now that spring's here they tell me they've been discontinued. I'm thinking of just getting 1 new Commmercial TA, rather than buying 4-5 new tires. What would you dod and has anyone heard of issues with the TA's? A few years ago people seemed to like them.

I've been towing trailers since 1990, I've had flats from rocks or nails or something but I've never had a blow out on the trailer in all that time and I've never gotten into the habit of replacing them every 5 years (not having deep pockets) but I've always had good tires, not China bombs, I had Maxxis on the old trailer.
We go on 2-3 trips a year, we drive 6-7 hours into the interior of BC, setup camp for 4-6 weeks per trip, maybe we move to another lake or 2 in the area then drive the 6-7 hours home, so in a year we're not actually putting a lotta miles on the trailer.
OK, so if I sell these tires to get 4 or 5 new ones (thinking it will be easier to sell a set of 4 instead of 3) what is the latest trend on this forum for E rated LT's, mine are 225/75R16's? I've been told the Bridgestone Duravis 250's have been discontinued...

6 years old? You should play the lottery, YOU are a lucky man. I will change mine after 3 years. I will not let them stay on for 4 years again.

And before you say anything about changing car or truck tires every 4 years. Please under stand. trailer tire are completely different than truck, or car tires. Biggest thing. Car, and truck tire ROLL every day, or most ever day. Rolling OILS the tire. Preventing them from dry rotting

Trailer tires sit for months on end with out rolling, well most do. and sitting allows them to dry rot, as they can't oil themselves. It doesn't matter how much tread they have. It only matters how old they are, and how long they have been sitting still.

Your tires are 6 years old, and barley worn. they been sitting a lot. They are just looking for a place to come apart. Get them off before you leave the driveway again. OR. Do you feel lucky? Well do you.

BTW. I had 2 yes 2 trailer tire separate last summer in one trip. they were 4 years old. Before that. On my last TT. I had one come apart after 4 years, a Goodyear. My TT tires will never stay on that long again. And I take real good care of my tires.

had the same on a 30' C what a piece of junk went thu 3 tires in 2yr , went to FStone so much better. BFG has a very hard rubber like Mic,had the bubbles also. mine were built 46/10

I just replaced the tires on my IROCZ Camaro. The nubs were barely worn off. Those tires are EXPENSIVE. They have a Z speed rating. If I were to take the camaro out and jump on it, I don't need an old tire exploding at well over 100 MPH. Tires performance degrades a lot over time.

On the other hand, I am sure you can get a used tire about the same age as the rest of your tires.... It is up to you.

I detest tire problems and the time, it takes to deal with it, as well as the damage it usually causes.

Personal preference and deep pockets.

A 5 year shelf life is just that.....not installed or used or sold in 5 years from DOM then it is deemed unsaleable.

But 10 years in use from DOM is generally the norm for tires.

So you change tires on all your cars, your truck and your RV when they're 5 years old even if you've only worn 2/32" off them?

Shelf life means tires should not be sold if they're 6 years old, most websites I'm finding recommend changing them if they're 10 years old.

Near as I can tell they were made 04/11, the same time as the other 2 sizes
that are being recalled.

That is when the clock starts ticking. How much tread is worn off means nothing.
Tires are made primarily of natural materials that degrade over time.

I NEVER go more than 5 years on any of my tires.
Not from when I bought them... From the date code.

How long is a few years ago ?

BFG Commercial T/A and Uniroyal HD-H had recalls in the '10-'12 era for tread separation.
bfg recall. See your BFG dealer as your old tires may be included in this recall.
I would replace them all with the new Commercial T/A2 AS tires.

My son had 4 Commercial T/A AS on a 34' 5er. BFG gave him 4 new Commercial T/A2 AS in 2014 which are the new upgraded ones.

Michelin owns BFG and Uniroyal. In the early/mid teens Michelin/Uniroyal/BFG all had tire issues of some type or other.
Prior to those years no problems with the same tires. I would 'spect their buyers found material at a cheaper price. :R
