Mine came with a wireless unit already installed but I didn't want to mount the display in the truck. Already have a display (Ford sync) so I went to ford part, bought a replacement camera for the tailgate cam (didnt want to lose my existing cam when not camping) made a housing and mounted it off the slide out awning bracket. Ran wiring externally exactly as you suggested down the back and under the stair frame. Also bought tailgate camera wire harness at ford and cut this in half connecting one end to camera, other end to wire extension cable took other end and plugged it in to connector under Truck by spare tire that normally connects to tailgate cam and ran wire out to meet piece under stair frame. Added two mating connectors to these ends so when I want to unload camper at campground, I just disconnect cable at stairs and one half stays with camper the other attached to Truck. In order to use this with sync display while driving down the highway I bought a Coastal Tech "LockPick Mytouch 2" controller. This allows use of steering wheel buttons to turn on/off. The original wireless camera and display would have been easier and cheaper but...
