Hi all, Getting ready to get a TT ;)... I am wondering how far, on average, you will drive per day when having to travel a long distance.

Thanks in advance

We will do a 13-14 hour day driving from here to our son's house, just us (and the dog) in the truck. Towing I prefer to do much shorter days, but I will leave home in the dark (5am or so) to do a longer first day. I don't like to get in to a campsite in the dark, particularly if I have never been there before.

Next winter I am headed to Tucson for what is about a 17-18 hour drive and I will break that into 2 overnights, hopefully with the longer day as the first day. The way back I might do longer stints.

We made a trip to Alaska and drove 600 miles a day, quote Smokey and the Bandit, "A long way to go and a short time to get there." Not anymore about 300 is max. As I have gotten older I do not like to drive after dark.

I think there is a 2 x 2 x 2 rule. Never drive more than 200 miles. Never stay more than 2 days and always check in before 2 pm.

About 300 for me. I've done much more but I don't like it.

yup, we take back roads most of the time, I prefer around 250 or so, 300 ok, 350 is a max. Like to be set up by 3pm or earlier, relax, enjoy. To me 350 with the trailer is about the same as 800 not towing.

My wife and I both drive in 3 hour shifts.. 600 to 700 max per day
unless we have a tight time budget then we just drive until we reach our destination..

It all depends on how much time we have for the entire trip or how fast we "really" need to get there. On average, for the last 10 years or so, it's about 6 hours on the road a day, however far that just happens to be depending upon where the travels take us.

One thing we learned a LONG time ago: it's just absolutely no fun, no fun at all, to drive hours and hours and hours to arrive at the destination and then be so beat-out and tired you really can't enjoy the time AT the destination, because all you want to do is sleep and the entire entire time there is nothing but a blurr. Fatigue is nasty. And the older you get, the worse it gets. So the drive should NOT wear you out... or those with you, so you feel good and enjoy the destination.

For us, we always plan on lots of stops now, we plan on things to see and do along the journey. We don't mind shorter driving times to experience more road side attractions or surprises. We plan on some of these, and sometimes, just they happen very unexpected. And believe it or not, it's the unexpected stops and events that we always seem to remember the most and laugh at the most. The planned activities somehow seem to get forgotten in time.

For example, here's a few photos of the unexpected that left quite an impact! But looking back, I have no clue what we were actually doing:

we travel 4-5 hours per day or about 250-300 miles. We have plenty of time. If you need to travel long distances, leave real early in the morning so that you can stop every 2 hours and arrive early in the afternoon. We don't feel as tired that way.

We are not retired, but 7-8 hours is our max while towing. I'm sure at some point we'll have to do more, but we're usually pretty done at that point.

Longest drive in a car together was from Las Vegas to Denver, that was a bit miserable, although my car at the time wasn't a very comfortable one. By myself I've done 8 hours (Omaha to Colorado, blech).

About 300. Start around 10:00 start looking for CG around 4:00.

Many offices close at 5:00-6:00 and we have found that you often get a better site by being there early plus we enjoy being set up and watch the late arrivals back into picnic tables and yell at each other.

If we like the area stay a few days.

Whatever it takes. Last month it was 13 hours in 1 day. In the past I have done three 12 hour days in a row. What works for me may not work for you. Do whatever you think is best for you.

If I am in get-there mode, I'll do a 12 hour day. That's right around 800 miles when I'm towing. If I have more time available I prefer to keep it to 400 miles or less.

If I do pull into a campground after dark, and it's relatively level, I just plug in and do the rest of the set up in the morning. If I'm in get-there mode, I'm going to be pulling out early to get back on the road so there's no point unhitching.
