We did the same thing as you are contemplating only we bought a 2nd motorhome. It's kind of a hassle to take the 40' MH into busy towns or cities just for a night or two. We bought a 24' for ease of getting around in towns and for games, concerts and winery type venues when we want to spend the night.
The 24' is good for 1 or 2 nights but anything more than that, we take the 40.
It is more maintenance but since the usage and mileage is split between 2 vehicles, there isn't as much "wear and tear" on the furniture, appliances, generator, etc: so they really don't need as much upkeep. Of course there is the once a year waxing and oil change, but the convenience and choice of 2 rigs is worth it to us.
