How To Buy A Camper In Canada and Exchange Rate....

I found a camper in Canada I'd like to buy and I'm in North Dakota. I'm wondering what the process is for buying items in Canada and bringing them to the US. Also, the exchange rate is currently $1.00 Candian for $.75 US dollars. If I go to a bank in Canada with US dollars will I get this exchange rate? I'm just looking for first hand experience from someone that has maybe done this. I've looked on google but I'm still a little confused by all of it. Thank you in advance.

I'm from Canada and all very good advice, declare all funds for sure make sure there r no liens on the camper as you don't want to get stuck. Ask for the original bill of sale where they got it from and do your homework.

Since it sounds like your from a State that doesn't register and title truck campers it is a lot easier. Above advice is spot on. Definitely declare the amount of money you are carrying. Bank cheque plus what's in your wallet. Bring a copy of the truck camper ad. Even if its on Craigslist or whatever, have something. The amount of money is going to make the border guard ask a few questions but it should be no issue going through if you answer all questions clearly and without hesitation. Don't hide anything. If they ask a question your unsure about just say your unsure.
Since its a private seller get a written Bill of sale from them. Signed by all parties. Addresses, names, etc. The border services are going to want to see this. As for paying duties to bring it home. "Probably" not. Every time I ask when I go in to check on this, this is the answer I get. They don't want to give a clear answer as they are unsure of what your bringing back until your there with it for them to see.

Yes you have to declare the truck camper.

I had a truck camper for sale in Canada last year with interested parties contacting me from the US. I went in and checked about having the camper going South with a new US owner and the above info was what I was told.

To be sure, on your way to go and get it stop in on the US side and ask what it takes to bring it back. Then you'll know for sure about what your in for on your return trip at that particular crossing.

IIRC when you come back to the US they ask if you bought anything in Canada. when you say you bought a $30,000 camper, things might get muddy. have the fella in Canada drive to N dakota and swap there?

Thanks, this is very helpful. The camper is from a private seller and the cost is $30,000 Canadian. Will I be charged any fees for bringing it into the US. Is it something I need to declare? It's not being registered in the US as it's just a truck bed camper.

And when You cross the border with a bank draft for more than $10,000 make sure to tell the Canadian border Agent that" yes" , You have more than $10,000 and what it is for. Otherwise u will have more Questions than u ever want .

If it is a private sale, no GST or HST should be exchanged.

I don't know the cost of the camper but just be careful with crossing the border with over $10,000 - A lot more questions get asked when you have that much money.

I can't help you on that but check out how to recover the HST or the QST.
You need to look them up on the Internet and read up on them.
I've been to all 50 States but my RV hasn't.

Now is the time to buy in canada
If your banknhas branches in canada it would be the easiest way
Other wise have a bank draft form you us bank in canadian fund so you will pay about $.75 for each canadian dollar, just make sure you d'ont lose it or just get us$ and then in any canadian bank you will trade it at the same rate, you need good ID cards because they will ask you where the money is from and what you want to spent it on.
Good luck
