importing camper from B.C.

In early 2013, I bought my 2008 Bigfoot in BC and drove it across the US Border at Blaine on I-5. Just had to have a copy of the invoice with me. The discussion at the border was very cursory. Much easier than I'd anticipated. I first contacted a customs broker who suggested I should phone the customs post directly, which I did. US Customs were easy to get a hold of and told me what I needed to know. So I did not use a customs broker.

Easy peazy.

we don't get a registration number or anything of that nature when we buy a camper here, so you'll need to jump through those hoops. if its a used camper get as much info with the sales reciept from the seller as you can.

Truck campers in BC are not a registered vehicle and do not have a VIN number. BIG difference. Hence, ok to import INTO BC, but a problem to import into USA apparently. There was a thread on here a while back about this very subject. Do a search

We did it for our previous Class C that we bought from a rental agency in BC. We used a Customs Broker to handle the paperwork, and were able to drive it thru the border at the Truck Route crossing and did not need to go "inside" for more complex paperwork.

We needed a USDOT compliance certificate from the manufacturer. (In our case for a Triple E RV manufactured in Canada). Also any RV sold in Canada requires a propane system inspection and certificate that shows compliance. We paid the dealer about $1,000 USD to replace the tires, replace the batteries, change the speedometer/odometer from Kilometers to Miles, and to do the border crossing paperwork.

The broker drove the MH to (and thru) the border with me, which allowed us to avoid GST tax issues, that would have required us to pay the tax, and then apply for a refund. It was a very easy experience. I think that the GST situation is much different now.

I've done it the other way, from Us to Cdn. It was simple then, with a customs broker involved. I had to get a simple power ground wiring put in to meet cdn. import standard. Did that myself.
For a few Toonies a broker will make it easy.
