Realistic look at EV TowingWell those of you all gung ho for new electric p/u should try this realistic look at what to expect: 60 mile real world range when towing, 24 hour (not overnight) recharge on 240 V charger or one week on 120 VI think electric cars are OK for urban dwellers with short range needs, forget towing.

60 miles seems short unless that is worst case scenario. 24 hr charge might be right for L2 if you happen to arrive perfectly empty and must have full 100% before you go again. 120v is a joke at this level.While the tow rating is substantial I agree it may not be practical for very many people.Still try to imagine getting 60 to 80 MPG on this large vehicle that should be able to run a mid 12 second 1/4 mile while you commute, out to dinner, Home Depot, stop for groceries and the rest. Going to be a compelling vehicle for many people. I mean trade that Prius econobox in already.

Since when did campgrounds only have 15 amp outlets? It is a nice video--but clearly he did not research charging at campgrounds too well.

Personal opinion, I think if electric vehicles are mandatory it will hurt the poor the most. The people in low paying jobs drive (beaters) to work they purchase for 1 or 2k. Raising the price of fuel 8 bucks a gallon to push people into electric hurts people that can barely afford to make ends meet as it is.

I'm not against electric and seriously considering the Ford 150 electric. But I beleive this issues along with environmental concerns need to be addressed not repressed.

This. I get that electric motors are really efficient at producing a lot of power and zero lag. Lower emissions sure, but power/energy is never lost, it's just converted or transferred. To produce power to charge EV's and manufacture them you still need power plants. You need infrastructure. The raw materials to manufacture the batteries are hardly eco friendly and there is no long term plan on how to dispose of the batteries at the end of their life.

EV's are great, don't get me wrong, but the entire process from manufacture to disposal needs to be vetted. Current state it's a bit of smoke and mirrors. Ooh look a new EV that does this and that. Don't look behind the curtain about how it's made or what to do with all the waste and the environmental impact from harvesting raw materials.
No wants to discuss the environmental impact and if you mention this you are chastised for not being a team player. Even major newspaper will not publish any letters that are negative on green energy LA Times. I think we need a open and honest discussion not just one sided opinion.

The solar helps with the peak loads on a hot day...the nuclear carries the base load at night on the grid where I live.

Not always...I live between two Nuclear plants and a 500 acre solar farm.

Also, most people charge at night when the base load on the electrical grid is low. This is why we can support some more EVs to a point with our current capacity.

Has there been a breakthru in solar? I thought the panels needed sunlight?

In a practical sense specifically concerning EV charging, they all do. Many have 30A 120V service, but there is no such thing as 30A level 1 charging that I'm aware of. You get the same charge rate as plugging into any 120V outlet regardless of its amp rating. If your site has 50A 240 service you might be able to use a universal level 2 charge adapter and get a decent charge overnight. But you might not have any current left over for niceties like A/C or microwave. If you want to use these things (most of us will, that's why we RV in the first place) you're back to level 1 charging.
