J rating vs. H rating

I just received a quote for 6 22.5 Michelin tires for a Class A at the not FMCA-member price. I'm just looking for confirmation from RV.net forum members that joining FMCA is worth the tire discount that you get. Is it? I assume it is, penny saved is a penny earned right? Another question I have is what does anyone know about getting a J rating 18-ply truck tire vs. an H rating 16-ply RV tire? Thanks. A.B.
  • You should go to the Michelin truck tire data book and check the speed ratings on any Michelin LRJ tire you are considering. Many of their LRJ tires are European designed with a maximum speed restriction of 62 MPH (maximum speed for truckers in Europe). The TRA does not allow tires with manufacturer speed ratings below 65 MPH to be manipulated with inflation pressures or tire load adjustments to gain a higher speed rating

  • Not many travel trailers use that size tire and travel trailer owners can't even join FMCA. :)
  • we saved about $75 per tire using the FMCA program. That's $450 savings for 6 tires. Well worth joining FMCA. Easy to use the program too. Our tire size is 295 80R 22.5 and we chose the XZA2 Energy Michelins load range H, 16 ply. They ride great!
