Just for fun - Dented Ford F150 beds or .........

The Ram and GM guys are having fun with the Chevy video on the Ford aluminum beds. So lets have fun with the crash test..

Pickup crash test

Ram rated marginal overall, poor in structure, and poor in foot and lower leg injuries.

GM double cabs rated acceptable overall and structure, but poor in foot and lower leg injuries.

GM crew cabs rated marginal overall, marginal in structure, and poor in foot and lower leg injuries.

Ford aluminum rated GOOD in all categories.

Hmmmm? Would I rather risk a dented bed by ignorance in dumping heavy pointed objects in my bed? Or would I rather risk having EMTs prying my legs out of a wrecked truck because some DUI or phone distracted driver drifted into my lane and hit me head on?

I can prevent bed damage by using common sense. I may not be able to prevent someone drifting across the center line and hitting me. I like my feet and legs the way they are. Think I will stick with a Ford. :B

Sorry Tory but that just does float, I have never not one time posted the hatred like you do pal. I have never disrespected anyone's new truck purchase. But yet you do it time and time again. Facts are facts Troy you are a little boy trapped in a mans body.

Funny how most of you claim I'm the one that doesn't have the facts but the fact is Ford has a very good truck now the safest (2016 and one 2015) on the road. There flaw is making a truck bed out of a aluminum to save weight. My guess is they could not make the inside of the bed out of steel with aluminum outer fenders cost effectively do to the dissimilar metals. So they compromised their trucks integrity just to save a few pounds. It's now going to come back to bit them in the butt and they are going to have to address it or they WILL loss sales.

The sad part is some of their fanboys just can't admit it. My truck may have the lowest payload at 1050 some pounds but it's going to take a lot more than a empty tool to punch a hole in the the bed. BTW there are guys out there tow 9000#+ RV's both TT's and Fiver's with this weakling truck.

"What if" a 1000lb large weight fell out of the sky, think of the old cartoons, and hit your parked truck? I guess you'd be looking for a new truck too!

Unbelievable amount of paranoia and "what if's" in this thread!

Interesting. Pretty much what what I learned about aluminum over the years.

Add to think of the old days with steel beer/soda cans...couldn't
crush them as easily as you can with today's ALU cans...

Wasn't going to comment on this, again, but it is pure science here

This is about tensile strength...anyone ever take a college materials
class? Or Strength of Materials class? Tensile Strength is its elongation
strength, generally speaking

Meaning stretch, as in being hit with those building block...that dented
it...that stretched it beyond it's plasticity point (ability to return
to original shape) and into yield (won't return) and beyond to crack

Here are some basic number off the top of my head from college days
decades ago...and confirmed by looking them up for specific numbers... :B

Wikipeda, Ultimate tensile strength

Of course if weight is of primary, then ALU. If strength is the primary,
then steel.

This should give an idea of the differences between aluminum and steel

Aluminum
6061-T6 is what am guessing the family of which the Ford bed is made from
Has an Ultimate Tensile Strength number of 300 MPa. There are higher, but
exotic ($$$$) and that is what I'd consider 'military grade'...
I've designed stuff for the military and even black badge...6061-T6 is
used, but the 'good' stuff that is real military grade is way stronger
and much, much, much more expensive that 6061-T6

Steel
Mud hen (mild) 1090 is 841 MPa and they also have higher alloys and again
exotic ($$$$$$$)

Also, don't know where you folks buy your building materials from, but
in my area...they ALL dump them into the bed just like that video

Or some times if you buy it by the pallet, they load it with a fork
lift. Pallet with wire cage to hold cobble stones/etc in and are
pre-weighed

There is a difference between Current MPG and Average MPG. I think someone was having fun! Off throttle, current can go way up. Chris

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
A Prius gets great gas mileage as well but it can't tow a 9000lb FW EITHER.

Your argument every time turns to "but look at my great MPG". That's great if the machine can perform the necessary task but it just won't work for many of us.

Your payload is what again?
And tow rating? Isn't that about 8700lbs with 60sq.ft frontal area?

This is my average after 37 miles at 60 mph. Hahaha and that's with a bed that won't get a hole in it from dropping a empty tool box in it.

I like reading Fishy`s posts!:R However, it must drive him nuts that my screen name is Dodge Guy and I drive a Ford. I actually own 3 Fords now. If Dodge made a HD SUV that's what I would be driving. If I ever came across a clean early model Cummins Mega Cab I would pick it up. that`s the closest they came to an SUV.

Maybe someone can chime in, can you use the 20K Companion with the gooseneck portion of the RAM Factory puck system? If so that would be less expensive and still high quality.

Curt is made in China, REESE ic China/Mexico if that matters. They are both harder to hitch than the B&W.

I'll chime in... That Mexican made truck and that Mexican made Reese hitch look like a match made in heaven. :W
