Be careful in how the tent goes in. My entire main frame has separated from the hinged side. When I close the tent it try's to stay up about 3/8 inch and not close. I would check to make sure the top of the frame is within the hole. If not, there is the gap that is letting in the dirt. I would have tried the same thing that you are thinking of if I had not noticed the gap at the bottom of the frame. And for the life of me I can not figure out how to reattach the flat tent back to the hinge. I suspect that there is nothing but foam in between the front and the back of the tent body. The world can be perfect for you not. Unscrew the rubber bumper. Get some flat washers and a screw 1/2 inch longer then the one you took out, Put the washers under the bumper and retighten screw. Fixed. But check the hinges also.
