License/title MDT in WA

I just spent over an HOUR in a local WA licensing office transferring title and getting plates for a Freightliner Sportchassis. To those unfamiliar, the truck is an MDT (medium duty), bigger than a 550 but smaller than a Class 8 (semi) tractor.

In 2012 WA changed their rules/regs regarding anything with a GVWR over 16,000. Clerk A gave me some papers to read and said I'd need a DOT number. Problem was, those papers clearly stated this was for a COMMERCIAL vehicle. I'm not a business nor a farmer. I went back a while later and talked to Clerk B who, after much time and phone calls and mouse clicking finally got me papered up and gone.

I was expecting trouble from my insurance company, but that was no sweat.
  • I would not doubt the Wa DOL would be a PITA! Even with my IHC that is COMMERCIAL, they can get picky. I was needing a DOT number if over 26K IIRC, and/or a trailer over 10K and going across state lines......maybe they have changed in the last few months. I guess I will find out in October.

Insurance should not be an issue, about the same as a 3500. Maybe a few bucks more. As the liability goes up, but comp and collision go down some. Altho the down does not quite make up for the up!

At 12K and over gvw is a hit, as they throw in some $75 DOT something or other, but before and after this, all of about 10 bucks per ton increase.

I was assuming a DOT number means scales and inspections. Does it?
