LLY Overheating Issue

I've been reading TheDieselPlace.com, as well as on this forum, about the Chevy LLY motor and its overheating issues. The last couple of times I've pulled in the mountains I've experienced the problem. I've read numerous posts about the problem but I'm still a bit confused about the basic reason its overheating, as well as just what the rememdy is. I want to be able to explain the reason to the dealer and what I expect to be done. Yeah, I know he may deny any problem exists, but for my own peace of mind, is there a fix that is not too expensive? I've spent a couple of hours on The DieselPlace and have read a lot of opinions but is there a specific cause and rememdy? Thanks.

    Do a search for posts by killerbee for all the answers. He has done a vast amount of work on this subject. Do not expect GM to stand up and admit there is a problem though. You would have a far better luck trading it for something different.

    Donn nailed it; either search or PM forum member killerbee and your overheating issues will be a thing of the past.

    Thanks for the posts. Have any of you ever used the Killerbee products? Did they solve the problem?

    Read Don's post again! If you do not believe it, then go to GM and find that they do not have a solution!! Then read Don's post again. Chris

    I installed one on my 05 GMC LLY I had. The only thing I noticed was my wallet was lighter.

    Your best bet is to make sure the radiator and charge air cooler are completely clean. Any blockage due to bugs and debris will cause heating issues.

    My LLY overheated (message center saying coolant is hot) in Canada but no loss of coolant and happened at a summit. Air temp was 95. Installed killerbee kit four years ago and no problems since. Traveled over rockies west of Denver twice and thru the Mojave desert with air temp at 104 with no problem. Last trip over rockies west of Denver was on a labor day and traffic was backed up for miles heading to Denver both up and down. Temperature guage goes up but stops way short of overheating. This is pulling 37' Montana with 04.5 2500 GMC. Not sure the kit did it but seems to have helped.

    Me Again: Was there something in my post that lead you to believe I was questioning Donn? I'm trying to get my problem solved. I don't currently have a monthly truck payment, and am trying to avoid getting one. If the Killerbee products work, then I'm definitely interested. But, I would like to hear from users, both pro and con. I thought it was a fair question.

    Personally I was in exactly your circumstances, but after overheating twice on me and GM's refusal to acknowledge a problem I had enough. Bit the bullet and bought a 6.7L Dodge, first year to boot and have not looked back. Better pulling power, more room and comfort.

    Yes visit Killerbee's site. What temps did you see? Bells going off or limp mode?
