Lowering Truck and Effect on Towing
I have a 2008 2500HD CC/SWB/2WD that I use primarily for towing a 13,000 lb. 5th wheel and I want to lower the truck 2-3 inches to give me more clearance between the top of the bed rail and the underside of the 5th wheel that rides above the bed. I have my hitch and 5th wheel pin box adjusted so that the truck and trailer are about level. Actually the front of the trailer is a 1/2" higher than the rear - I would prefer the trailer to be slightly lower in the front for optimum stability. With that setup, I have about 5" of clearance between the bed rail and trailer and the typical recommendation is to have 8". The truck bed and trailer have already contacted each other twice but only minor damage so far.
To get more clearance here are the three options I am looking at:
1) Raise the trailer 2-3 inches and adjust the hitch/pin box to re-level the trailer to create the additional 2-3 inches of clearance
2) Lower the truck 2-3 inches and adjust the hitch/pin box to re-level the trailer to create the additional 2-3 inches of clearance
3) Trade my truck in on a new Ford 2WD with a stock bed height 4" lower than our 2007-2015 trucks. Actually GM is the only with bed height being the same for 2WD and 4WD.
Option 1) is not desirable. The trailer is already just over 13' tall and I am already running into problems with clearing trees in campgrounds and lowering the towing stability by raising the trailer CG is not an option I want to choose.
So, in choosing option 2) I have a some questions for you all:
1) Has anyone lowered their GM HD pickup 2- 3 inches?
2) If so, how did you do it? A search online shows there are parts out there.
3) How has it worked out? Has there been any issues with reduced clearance or travel? Tire wear? Handling? Other problems?
4) Any impact to hauling or towing heavy loads with a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch?
Thanks so much! Any help in keeping me from trading in my truck on a Ford would be GREATLY appreciated!!! ;-)
