Michigan and Great Lakes

Hello to all,

We just purchased our new Northstar 9.5 Igloo and having spent a few nights in it in the driveway we are now prepping for a trip to Michigan and down around to Pictured Rocks, Apostle Islands, around the lake shore of Superior through Canada and then back through St Ignace.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks to all
Jim & Tam
  • Personally, and being a Michigander, we never even stop for gas until we're over the bridge. That said, the above suggestions are good. Be sure and add to the list; Muskalouge State Park and our personal favorite, McClain St Park in the Keewenaw. As for sightseeing, hit the Michigan Welcome Center rest area when you get into MI. Pick up list of waterfalls and lighthouses. When you get to da UP, Whitefish Point, Seney National Wildlife Area, and in the Keewenaw, several copper mines are definites on the list. Straits St Park, just over the bridge is a great "stopover" park and always has spots. Coming back, outside the Soo, is Brimley St Park (complete with casinos if that's your thing). Have fun and enjoy!
  • State parks are very busy this time of year.... get reservation if possible....Michigan shoreline is the best...
  • I forgot to add - You will really love the trip - The area is absolutely beautiful. Enjoy!
  • Take bug repellant! We LOVE Pictured Rock but if you are going in July the black biting flies and mosquitoes are huge and HUNGRY!
  • Take your time and take plenty of pictures, so you can enjoy it both now and later. I'd suggest working your way along the lower peninsula's Lake Michigan shoreline. Silver Lake SP, Ludington, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, Charlevoix, and Mackinaw City are all interesting. In the upper peninsula, some of the highlights include Tahquamenon Falls, the big spring at Palms Book SP, the Pictured Rocks (you know about of course), McLain SP and the western Keweenaw Peninsula shoreline all the way to Ft. Wilkins SP, the Porcupine Mountains SP (both east and west units), and Bond Falls near Paulding.

The shoreline and state parks N of Duluth are great, too. Be sure to stop at the Palisade Head (south of Gooseberry Falls if memory serves). And in Grand Marais, don't miss Artist's Point out past the coast guard station... either before or after you have pizza at Sven and Ole's.
  • Sounds like a great trip to me. Have a great time and tell us all about it, 'k?
