Mode 6 scan tool fun w/ the v10, random misfire

Felt a random misfire the other day on the Excursion after a 200 mile tow. Misfire could be induced under light load. Didnt matter if engine was warm or cold. Problem with 10 cylinders is that how do u determine which one or more of them is the suspect cylinder(s)?
Truck showed no codes and had no codes pending so no Check engine light was on.
If your scan tool has mode 6 it will give you a misfire count for each cylinder. In mode 6 I them went into $53. It listed each cylinder and they all had 0 misfires except cylinder #6. It was below the threshold to trip the CEL on the dash but had numerous misfires.
Ran to the parts store and got anew coil. Problem fixed.
I have encountered this problem before, last time two coils went out a the same time. Just thought I would share incase someone has problem similar. May save some diagnostic time and $$.
  • Thanks... and timely. I'm shopping for a new scanner now. Never knew about mode 6. On our 2003 I do carry spare coil over plug and injector.

Shopping for new scanner because batteries leaked in old one. Hint hint before new scanner stays under seat, I'll remove batteries
    Thanks again
  • No problem. Hope it helps out. Get one that supports all 10 modes. Prices have come down them as of late. Mine cost under $70 including shipping

I have heard of this on multiple Ford products and using mode 6 is the only to find the offending cylinder. Not sure why it does NOT turn on the CEL !
