Montana camping

We'll be heading out to the Rockies this summer and will be spending some time in Montana. We like to fly fish and hike and would like to spend a week or so on the Big Hole river near Butte. Any suggestions as far as nice little campgrounds in the Wise River or Divide areas? We don't require hookups, necessarily. We'll also spend some time on the Madison River near the Three Dollar Bridge. Any advice on CGs on the river there, too? This below zero and single digit temps really get me to thinking summer, although nighttime temps in the Rockies in August at times get pretty chilly, just not that cool!
Thanks, Kopak
  • I visit Montana every summer in my TC to fish with my cousin from Dillon. Take a look at my blogs for the last few years for possible camp sites. If you click on "Campsite Map" at the top you can get a quick idea of where I've camped in MT. I've been all over the western half, including both the areas you mentioned.

As far as the Big Hole, there is a small BLM campground (East Bank) right on a nice section of the river. It's 8 mi W of Wise River. See my 8/28/08 blog entry.

Give the Beaverhead River a try in the Dillon area.

Feel free to email me via my website with any questions, or PM me here.

I'll be returning next summer. Maybe our paths will cross. :)

    Have fun,
  • Research the fishing access sites in Montana. (link)

Many allow overnight stays and some include a vault toilet.
  • Ramblin Ralph, DWeikert,

Thanks for your responses. It gives me some much needed info.

  • PS: The photo in my sig is at the Raynolds Pass FAS (link) just a mile or so upstream from Three Dollar Bridge.
  • Dan,
I remember it well. I've fished there, too.
