MPG on 5.7L Hemi

Hi... we’ve just sold our 2001 Dodge Ram CTD and we’re currently looking at ordering a 2018 Dodge Ram Outdoorsman crew cab with a 5.7 L Hemi with a 6’4” Box.

Our travel trailer is a 24’ I-Go, weighing in around 4,000 lbs.

What we’re having trouble finding, is what kind of average gas mileage we can expect towing a trailer the size of ours.

Anyone out there towing a trailer similar with a Dodge Hemi 5.7L that can give us some real figures?

Truck in my sig gets 9.5-10 in good weather if I keep it under 65. More speed, more wind, or significant hills, it's 8.5-9.

It's the size of the sail you're pulling, not the weight.

I used to walk around campgrounds asking other people what kind of gas mileage they were getting with their setups. Then I ran across a wise older gentleman that had spent several years as the owner of a tow truck and recovery company. His response to me was "you can't have the fansy toys and care about gas mileage." And I haven't thought about gas mileage while pulling the "fansy toys" anymore since then.

I get 8-9 pulling a 7,100 lb TT with 3.21 gears 8 spd @ 65 mph with 42psi in tires flat ground no headwind.

I'd say 10-12 based on the fact that I have a tired 5.3L V8 in my Chevy and tow a 17' Jayco hybrid (8' wide) and get around 11 most times, and that's with a 4 speed auto (3.73 axle ratio) that has to run in 3rd at 2800 RPM all day long when towing. Mountain towing will drop that to 9 mpg. If you count on 20-23L/100Km, you'll be close.

All gas v-8 engines will get 8-11mpg average when towing.
No matter brand and no magic bullet to improve it.

My 5.7, 8 speed, 3.92 combo usually gets me around 9 mpg. I tow in pretty varied terrain, from the Rockies to the Cascades and beyond. I could probably do better, but I get impatient.

My 13 Outdoorsman was one year too early for the 8 speed. I had the 6 spd and 3.92. The engine and trans towed my trailer like a dream. round trip Michigan to Alaska and Michigan to Death Valley, so LOTS of mountains, never short on power. Only once did I back off the throttle up a grade, I dont recall the road, it was westbound uphill grade between Vegas and Death Valley. Despite December, it was nearly 100F outside, with a headwind blowing East. I saw my trans temp climb significantly holding 60mph in maybe 3rd gear? Dropped down to 40mph for the rest of the climb, temps dropped, crested the grade and back to 60 no more issues.

My only complaint was payload. The Outdoorsman has so many bells and whistles, even with the smaller 4 door cab (the discontinued quad cab), I had 1200 payload. The rear springs were so very soft, even 500lb tonque had it squatting badly.

Trading in for the Tradesmen 2500 took some adjusting, I sometimes miss all the creature comforts the Outdoorsman package offered. But the price was almost the same between trucks, and an extra 2100 lbs payload help me get over the loss of creature comforts.

I have a 2013 ram 2500 4x4 with 3:73 gears and 5.7 Hemi and average 8.5 towing a 7,000 lb TT. I have made several long trips with it and it’s pretty consistent between 8.3-8.7. I set the cruise at 62 mph. She will run in 5th gear at 62 mph and 2,100 rpm. If I go 65 mph she prefers 4th gear and 2,500 rpm. I think you should have better mpg with a lighter combo, 3:92, and 8 speed. But as mentioned it depends on a lot of variables.

The 5.7 Hemi gets similar mpg to the 5.7 Tundra. Budget and plan on 8-9 mpg. Then you'll be happy when you get better, and you will get better, and you will get worse. Plan on 8-9 and you'll be happy. Nobody on this forum can say you will get 11 mpg overall; too many factors involved like up-hill down-hill, etc.

Count on 10 miles to the US gallon just as we all do and you'll be in the ballpark. My 19' Coachmen averages ~ 4800 lbs loaded & ready to camp and towing with my 5.3L Silverado I typically see 10.5 to low 12s, depending on terrain and wind.

12 mpg - maybe, but 15? Now that's funny! 😛
