Along the line of screens, I was wondering what, if any appreciable affect they might have on performance of the appliance. For instance, putting screen over the refrigerator vents. How much reduction in air flow might that cause? Will it matter?

Don't know anything about the flea collar idea except that you'd have to replace them every few weeks, so it's back up the ladder. I would be more inclined to remove the shroud and come up with some screen to cover those areas. For some reason, the mud daubers around us love the WH, refrig and heater outlets but have never bothered our A/C. Maybe being under cover 24/7 discourages them from heading up there. DH got our screens put on last night, so we're not going to have to worry about those nasty things.

Spray with water from a safe distance.

You order some of the screens made for that - one for the WH, one for the furnace and a set of 3 for the refrigerator openings.....just like the UPS guy delivered about 10 minutes ago. CW has a sale right now....still not cheap, but the set on our ROO looks brand new after 7 years. These are for the new TT. Going now to watch DH put them on.....takes maybe 10 minutes. Hate mud daubers!!!

Try putting a flea collar or two clipped through the shroud vents. Most bugs hate flea collars.

If mud dobbers are building on TOP of the ac it's generally not a problem but if they move into cracks and crevices they can block normal air flow. Best defense is to screen the area they're getting into. This is quite often inside refrigerator service panel or furnace exhaust vents and these areas are fairly easily screened.
