My Home Made Tiedowns with Pics
When I had my Ranger I made my own tiedown which mounted to the frame. Now that I upgraded to a 2002 F250 and a 2000 Lance 1010 I once again decided to weld up a set of four tiedowns. The rear slide into the factory installed hitch and the fronts mount on the frame. Below is some pictures of the process.
These are the rear. They are made out of 2” square tubing and slide into the ends of the existing hitch and get pinned in keep them from falling out.. Pretty easy, straightforward setup.
The front tiedown mounts were a little tougher in which, on the drivers side, I had a fuel tank mounted next to the frame, not to mention fuel lines and wiring which would make it nearly impossible to get bolts thru the frame. The passenger side was wide open, regardless, I made bothe mounts the same.
It took a little head scratching and some reverse engineering to come up with some type of clamp that would hold the mount without having bolts go thru the frame. I knew what I wanted but not quite sure how to go about it. I ended up cutting a large chain link in half and welding it to a piece of ¾” black pipe. The chain link will hook over the top and bottom of the frame and a long #8 ½” bolt will go thru the black pipe.
The front tiedowns are beefy. I have not seen factory made ones but I imagine they are lighter weight than mine. I started with 2”x2”x1/4” angle iron and square tubing. The ones I made for my Ranger had extensions where I could slide them in and out or remove them. I made the F250 ones stationary, but could always modify them later.
