Mar 31, 2017You can find spring and foam mattresses in equivalent comfort levels. If you have one of the non standard mattress sizes (i.e short queen) then foam mattresses are nice because you can easily cut them down so you'll have more options. With spring mattresses you're limited to the ones that fit. Foam mattresses are normally easy to maneuver since they usually come in small vacuum packed boxes. Just drop the box on the bed, cut it open, and the mattress pops out.
As far as longevity, it depends on how you use it. If you're using the bed occasionally then longevity would be a wash between the two. The mattress won't see enough use to see a difference. If you're using it almost daily then I would lean more towards foam. Spring mattresses tend to show signs of wear only after a few years of daily use. Tomman58 mentioned breathability, but this isn't a problem with modern multilayered mattresses. A lot of foam mattresses are built with air chamber layers to allow heat to pass through.
We went through the whole foam vs spring thing. After lots of research and laying on tons of mattresses, foam ended up winning out and we won't be going back to spring. The foam mattress we bought ended up being better than any other spring mattress we've ever had.
