Need new rear axle and differential 2500HD GMC***UPDATE***

Have a 2017 GMC 2500 Denali HD Gas. Noticed some axle fluid on the rear inside passenger wheel. Thought I had a bad seal. Took it in for repair and they said "something let loose in there and you need a new rear axle and differential". Parts are ordered and they said they will have the truck for a few days to a week to fix. Truck has 10,500 miles on it. I'm guessing factory defect or something? Makes me feel uneasy about having major repair work done to the vehicle that I barely owned one year. Can I expect this to be "good as new" when it's done? I certainly will be watching it close, especially once the warranty gets close to expiring.

That sounds like a pretty good deal. With 10,500 miles, comes out to 38 cents a mile in depreciation it's cost you. I don't see how the dealer comes out well on that. Normally depreciation is pretty heavy the first couple of years.

I would take that deal.

Was at the GM dealer a couple of days ago and was told the 2019 2500 won't change until 2020 or later. There should be some changes in 2019 1500.

Isn't Chevy getting a all new truck for 2019? If so they ought to be out shortly.

I think 2019 2500HD trucks are the same?

Bummer, if it was a TT you were pulling instead of a fifth wheel you could probably just get a loaner off their used car lot, or rent a 2500 for your trip. But needing a fifth wheel hitch makes all that extremely unlikely. But what the heck, I think asking for a loaner to pull a fifth wheel is still worth a shot; who knows, maybe they can hook you up.

I did mention this, but something about their insurance not allowing them to provide loaners for towing prevents this from happening.

Sit tight, see if you can find a hotel/campground cabin where you are going on vacation and save some money. Good luck and have fun.

Update: Truck is still at dealer. Been there since 7-27-18. Got a call today stating that the part hasn't even shipped yet and after it ships, takes 5-7 days until delivery. Apparently parts aren't just sitting in a warehouse, but need to be manufactured. I've been without my tow vehicle for 2 weekends already, for sure a third this weekend, and possibly even a fourth the following weekend. Our camping/boating season is so short here in Wisconsin already. Supposed to be leaving for a week long camping trip on the 16th of August and doesn't look good for having my tow vehicle back by then. Frustrating. Considering trading the truck in on an identical 2018 so we don't have to cancel our family vacation. I mentioned trading it in to the dealer and he is getting some numbers together and will be getting back to me. The GM is also contacting supplier to see if there is a way to expedite the order/shipping. I'm guessing I would take a big hit trading in a year old vehicle. I guess just venting here.

Thanks. I did take it to the dealer for service. In fact it was scheduled to go in the following week for a recall on the axle nut. Something like checking the torque on the rear axle nut. I called and told him about the fluid and he said to bring it in right away and they would take a look at it. Glad I did.. They said the failure wasn’t related to the recall

So...your rear hub was loose and leaking oil, and it ruined the differential...... but it had nothing to do with the recall to check the spindle nut torque? Granted, the story has obviously got multiple layers of getting passed along from the tech, to the service advisor, then your words.... My guess is that it was direct result.

I'm certainly no mechanic, but I was thinking along the same line you were that there had to be a correlation? I was told that if it was a loose axle nut the gear oil would have been all over the outside of the wheel, not the inside? But like I said, I'm no mechanic. Once I get the truck back and talk with the service guy again and see the paperwork, I'll update this too.

The nut sets the bearing preload, the axle shaft its itself seals that outer area from gear oil leaking out, it would most certainly leak at the hub seal and inside the wheel with the nut loose. Sounds like the service write is either ill informed or just diverting to make it seem like they were separate issues.
