New Gears..... Update!
I posted here several weeks ago about swapping out the gears in my 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE RWD with 5.3L. I had recently purchased a 21 foot Gulfstream Ameri-Lite that had a listed dry weight of 3215 pounds. When I hooked on to pull it home, it wasn't a pleasant towing experience with my 3.23 gears.
A week later, I got the gears swapped out and was looking to address the ABS error due to the speed sensors detecting that the speedo was moving a lot slower than the front wheels. I decided on a custom dyno-tune to alleviate the problem and add a bit more torque and HP.
The good news is that the gear swap from 3.23 to 4.10 has improved performance substantially as far as torque and perceived HP (you can't increase one without the other). The gear shop that did the work changed out the oil and replaced it with an oil highly recommended for towing plus they checked backlash in the gears. All looked great. The throttle response still sucks and the shifts are slow as well but I have an appointment on Monday at 1:00 PM to get the dyno-tune done. The truck goes in tomorrow for an engine oil change, tires rotated, balanced and check front end alignment in anticipation of my trip back to Texas.
This update is because there were a lot of nay-sayers that said the tune will do absolutely nothing for me other than correct the speedo issue so Monday evening, I will have the numbers. I'm going with a towing tune running 87 octane gas. I have the option of doing a performance tune and then running 91 octane when towing but I'll have to sort all of that out over the weekend so stay tuned.
