New TT axles
The new TT I`m getting has the axles set farther apart. Has anyone really noticed a big difference while pulling with the new setup?

- Going to a spread axle system lets them use a longer spring and longer equalizer between the front and rear springs. This can give a better ride and give a more even weight distribution between the axles. The downside is you can get more tire scuffing in very tight turns, but nothing like you get in a triple axle trailer.
- Having built equipment trailers, on and off for over 40 years, the wide space is used to spread the load. It is more inconvenient to spread them because you aren't using a standard equalizer. Semi Truck trailer manufacuters do this for the same reason. Spreading the load does make a difference. You will notice it being common on alumimum frame Semi Truck trailers.
For a TT it is cost saving for a frame that isn't as strong as one required with a standard spacing axle setup. - The ONLY reason I can see for spreading the axles a bit more is cost. Sway is just not an issue. No trailer is inherently conducive to sway (unless the axles are significantly FORWARD of the Center Line)As for weight distribution you still have X amount of weight handled by two axles.
As for doing this because of using a lighter frame. Moving the axles a few inches apart would have almost no effect upon the forces exerted at the far front or rear ends of the trailer upon the frame. You still have a cantilever problem. Basically in Engineering terms when the trailer is either hitched or with the tongue jack down you have a "bridge" supported by two points. Again moving those axles a few inches away from each other will not have any significant effect upon the loading to the frame.
My guess is this: the wider spaced axles are easier and thus quicker resulting in CHEAPER to install on the frame. - I have the spread axles , I towed it over 650 miles with a 20-25 mph head to cross wind , it stayed behind the truck and the tail did not even attempt to wag the dog, no sway control used,
- This is a type of construction that is aimed at the lightwieght TV crowd. The advantages are the ability to use a lighter frame in the TT, and the ability to lower the TW, while still towing well. Issues that are of benefit to 1/2 ton and smaller TVs.
The disadvantage is the increased force on the tires/wheels/suspension when turning.
I have seen spring hangers ripped off the frame from these forces.
IMO, if you have one, avoid turning sharp such as when backing into a campsite. Especially on high traction surfaces such as asphalt. - Of course the flatbed trailers mentioned above usually have a dump valve to release air pressure as they slide around corners.
- Our old Sunset Trail had the "Wide-track" axles. They did fine for me. I think it road better and turning wasn't any different. If you look at many flatbed trailers (18 wheelers) they have spread axles as well. Good luck and enjoy.
- Rumor has it manufacturers went to the wide axle spacing to spread the load on lightweight frames.
There's a LOT more scuffing in the wide spaced axles when making tight turns. Can't say I notice any difference in towing. - They said it makes it more stable and really helps with sway.
