Hey all...how crazy is it to think about installing a generator somewhere in our '07 Arctic Fox trailer..??..Nate

Crazy!Unless you do a vast number of days boondocking it will bea waste of money. Now, if you do actually boondock a lot, then a small generator will come in handy. But carried in your truck bed would be wiser, easier, cheaper at the end of the day.

Seem like some AF models offered Gen sets. Anyway, I really enjoy the on-board Gen on our current trailer.

Think about the noise aspect being installed inside the trailer and the exhaust fumes if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction and the windows are open. I usually cable lock my Honda2000 to a tree a short distance away, pointed away from us and other campers so as not to be easily heard. And stored/hidden when not being used. I had a Class C with an onboard Onan. It was really useful for having power when traveling down the road but the noise and fumes were pretty bad while parked. I did use it a couple times at night to run the A/C while boondocking. But my Honda could do that in a pinch if I turn off all other loads.

I know of people with onans in their toy haulers who have bought off board generators to minimize hours and vibration. I don't subscribe to that philosophy.

FYIWe decided that having a pair of Honda EU-2000s was a better call. In the standard AF generator bay we can fit one "factory" generator, or two Honda 2000's -and- our BBQ, waste hose stand and three packages of Lynx levelers.For trips when we need power, like the long boon-dock weekends in the summer we have the Honda'sWhen we are taking a trip where we have power, we can leave the Honda's at home and have more roomThen we also have the Honda's for those winter time power outages we always have.

If the RV is not genset ready consider mounting generator on rear or tongue mounted platform.
I had a genset mounted to a custom made platform on my prior TT.

Without it being generator ready it would be a hassle unless it had a dedicated generator compartment, metal lined. Generator ready usually has a built in transfer switch, fuel line and electric wire to generator, metal lined and vented compartment sealed from trailer, for fire and carbonmonoxide.

I'd be pretty willing to bet that no manufacturer is going to sanction the installation of a generator, transfer switch and fuel tank in one of their trailers. Now if it was originally an option on that model they may do it for you if you return it to the factory but it probably won't be cheap.

I have my eu3000is mounted on a rack above the propane bottles. The rack is built by Stromberg-Carlson. Not exactly built in but I just run the cord up, plug it in and crank her up. I suppose I could permanently wire it with a transfer switch but so far haven't seen the need.

Put it on there . Ain't no big deal ! I have mounted gens on the front or the back for fourteen years . No problems , no thefts , if ya do it right there is very little vibration . We dry camp 100 days a year in our jobs . We have a Honda 3,000 on the back of our Forrest River on a platform with the spare and a bunch of chocks , is the sky gonna fall; .

I have done it on my last TT.
It was great. The only reason I haven't done it on my present TT, is that the built in units do not use inverter technology like the portables do.
The fuel savings, especially when gas was expensive will pay for my Hondas in short order.

For what use? Battery charging? TV/laptop/cell phone? Microwave/hairdryer? 24/7 air conditioning?

For the price, weight and space of an ONAN and fuel consider solar, more battery and inverter.
