I believe the towing package is included on all 4Runners with a hitch (easy to spot, and most of them have a hitch), but know for sure that it is on all V8 4Runners. I don't have any experience with the pathfinder, but I know that the 4Runner is a great vehicle. I have a 2005 model V8 and 4WD and plan on having it for a long time. It's got plenty of power to pull a 3,500lb trailer (the V6 will as well). That is the route I would go.
