I believe the payload ratings of these new trucks are set by corporate attorneys - not the engineers that designed and built the trucks.
My truck is "over-loaded" and it doesn't seem to bother the truck what so ever.
There should be a sticker in your glove box that will give you an idea of how much they recommend the max weight for a camper for your truck. Its a good place to start.
Mine says 2935 lbs. My camper weighs 3760 lbs. No problem.
