Pick the right floor plan.

For those who are new to TT shopping, I would stress the importance of the right floor plan.

The DW and I had thought we knew what floor we wanted in a TT but really were not sure we wanted to drag a barn behind us. So we rented a version of what we thought we wanted for a 10 day loop through the Ozarks and back.

I seemed the floor plan was not at all what we liked, so we started looking again. We found a few that we liked but I reminded the DW that you cannot scoot the furniture around because everything is in front or over something else. We were going to have to live with what we picked.

Well almost, we did hang mirrors, re-stuffed the folding couch so both halves we the same height when laid down, put racks and storage bins in the so-called bath tub, which was big enough for the dog maybe. We did have a small stroke of luck. The DW wanted one of the dinette seat removed and replaced with two chairs. Unfortunately the water pump was under there so we only removed half the dinette seat and added only one chair. The other side was over the furnace and could not be moved.

So that made me wonder, short of a major renovation, how many of the readers have been able to modify their floor plan?
  • This is our second trailer with a large rear bath, and the second time we modified the bath door swing to the inside of the bathroom. Good thing the "frame" is just a plastic channel. We first made sure it cleared the toilet and wasn't too tight with a person in there, like a small bathroom stall would be. It was an easy modification and made much more sense.
  • We bought a floorplan that we loved with plenty of storage so no need to change a thing or move anything. We added a couple shelves in a closet for towels but that was it. So what do you do with the storage bins when it is time to take a shower.
  • When I got my TT, I had few ideas as to what I wanted outside of "bathroom, kitchen, place to sleep, place to eat, place to relax". I lucked out and got a TT that worked pretty well for that, so I didn't feel the need to have to make changes.

When I decided to get a C, I looked at various floorplans and found one I rather liked, but then I saw the clipper and it has been perfect. I LOVE the layout. There isn't anything I would change to it. I love having the kitchen at the back with a big window - it makes it easy to hand out food, etc. to another person who can set the picnic table, etc. I love that the bathroom is in the corner so it doesn't block the light from the windows. I love the two big windows on either side with the dinette and flip-over couch under them. The cabover bunk is a cozy little nest at night (and stays warmer at night). The cupboards are all in the right places so that things are organized according to area (kitchen supplies are all in the kitchen, etc.).

I do think it helped that I have spent 30 years in small houses that aren't conducive to rearranging. I think it makes it easier for me to quickly identify a "negative" configuration.
  • It took me 4 TT's but, I found the right floor plan, FOR ME ! Not everyone wants the same thing.

I have a 20 foot TT with a rear bath, curb side dinette, and a cushion/couch in the front that folds down to a small bed. Perfect for me and the dog and our weekend trips.

The dinette folds down to a bed and there is a bunk up above in the front. When I go camping with friends this give us extra room to put their kids if necessary.

And, Although it doesn't happen very often , (especially now that I am 51,) if there are no kids around a woman can stay in the bed with me for a night too.

I love the layout. So, to answer your post. I found the right floor plan !!! But, it's just different then yours.

(To bad it's 22 years old and starting to reach the point of no return. I don't see many other used TT's in my area with the same floor plan. )
  • I guess you could say I did in an early camper. I changed out a north/south bed that was 60 by 72 into an east/west bed by just moving one small bedside cabinet. That gave us a super 84 by 72 foam mattress bed.

I have added cupboards and shelves, changed pedestal tables into dream dinettes, added flip up counters and sink covers.

But not really modified a floor plan so much as added features to what is there.
  • We took out our couch and replaced it with two recliners and a small table. We love it now. Seriously considering removing the dinette and replacing it with a table and 4 chairs, but not completely sold on it.
  • We picked a trailer that has everything free floating. Blackstone 280 RKSB .
Removing couch and 1 of 2 Recliners. Replacing with small desk, Lazy boy chair and footstool on couch side. Hutch and dog kennel on other side. Can alway put stuff back if we change our mind down the road. No bolts no muss no fuss. Pretty much the same weight straight across.
