Against instinct I took DW's advice and waited till our friend was here to have a go at the pump.
First order was to see if the pump had magically fixed itself with a jug of water and the winterizing hose. It pulled the water up about 2" and no more. Todd said not to worry as the pump was still under warranty. That was a relief for me cause I thought his warranty had passed. Then I decided to try priming the hose. No go. Then I tried blowing in the hose with it full of water but no go. Just as we were giving up and about to shut the pump off there was a gargling noise a voila the pump is working.
I guess(ed) that the check valve was stuck. I guess priming the hose was the trick. I had originally wondered it the check valve was stuck and maybe a shot of compressed air would have worked, which I would have tried eventually but it was a fair bit of fooling around to set up for it.

So in conclusion it was a stuck check valve and priming the winterizing hose worked.

Check the water filter for clogs if it has one. Also, my pump has a screen that needs to be cleaned periodically.

Or a clogged filter on the pump.
Most of the RV pumps can handle running dry for awhile without hurting them.
Open a faucet and try it with a clean filter.

Pump can't prime unless it can expel air...can;t expel air unless something downstream is open
Running pump dry won't hurt it

As an FYI, not all RVs have a diverter valve to select between pump water and city water.
The RVs I've been involved with don't have that valve.... everything works automatically.

When I first got my TT in April (used) I fired up the water system and water pump. Couldn't get it to pump anything.

The clue is... too cold for water connected. So, likely you have a valve that directs incoming water into the taps, or into the tank. If you filled the water tank by filling through the hose that also fills the taps, you had to move a valve to direct water to the tank.

If you did not shut that valve back to the other way, water just recirculates around and won't build up pressure.
