Post your Sneakiest Stealth Camp

Knowing it is illegal and then not only doing it but proud of it :H


And folks wonder why the term 'Stealth Camping' has a negative connotation to it

and I thought this might be interesting read for all.

We don't do sneaky. We do lawful and low key. We do layovers in cities large and small. You develop a sense of where to park successfully which can only come from experience. There are websites devoted to this general subject. BKA on here is the King of the Road in this regard. He won't respond as he is busy Rangering in Yellowstone. There is a LOT of vocal resistance to doing this in some quarters, especially those that own and run campgrounds for profit or have an RV that is too big to hide or must have hook ups, as you no doubt will read below from folks who do not claim own a TC. To them you are simply societal scum; left over hippies trying to bilk the system. The best place is on a public street in full sight, not trying to hide, but taking advantage of the almost universal 72 hour parking limit. I guess our 'sneakiest' layover was late at night pulling to the curb in front of a small light industrial area that had some over the road trucks parked around doing the same thing and waiting to unload in the AM. We got a few winks and left before anyone came to work. I hear Tioga George's website has morphed into a new one, now that his 25 year stint with Miss Tioga has ended. I think he has the longest stretch of overnighting with no pay sites. He has much savvy advice for those who are amenable and are interested in low key living on the road.
For us TC-er's, having a plain Jane rig with no visible 'camping' stuff hanging on or around is imperative.

I think this is the difference. Knowingly parking in a location where it is illegal and then bragging about getting away with it sends the wrong image.

Parking in a location where it is legal but making the effort to avoid issues (staying low key; not looking like a vagrant; not homesteading; etc.), is what stealth camping is about.

You guys have lot of things to learn.

Just forget it... the town was completely full everywhere... I did not know if legal or not... I took chance big deal!

No, we do NOT have a lot to learn. We RV legally. :R

We RV and pay to stay in legal CG spots meant for the traveling RV'er. Why buy an RV if you can not afford to pay to park it legally for the night?

our best low profile site was in a waterfront parking lot in downtown Halifax ,NS during the Tall Ships visit 17 years ago stayed two days for very reasonable rate attendant tucked us in a corner and we had ring side site for two days 1

The only "stealth camping" we have ever done is camping in the visitor center parking lot because we showed up too late. Every time it has happened the park rangers have been exceedingly friendly and understanding.

Oh, one time we camped on a street of a development that never got past the street construction phase. The owner ended up farming the lots, so we were on a public street on a hill in the middle of corn fields. We were noticed and a neighbor came by to check us out. After I told him I had just scared off a bunch of kids who came up here to get high, he gave his teenaged son a dirty look, thanked us and left. Technically it may not have been legal because we took up a lot of room in the cul de sac, but there was no reason to expect a lot of traffic either. I doubt a police officer would have hassled us.

We were hassled by a police officer once at a dog park in our own town. We had just gotten the camper, drove it to the park to have lunch and I decided to take my afternoon nap. Someone thought we were suspicious and called the police. Brand new Ram 3500 and brand new Lance camper, sparkling clean and beautiful and the police officer gives my wife the third degree. I'm really lucky he didn't wake me up because I would have been hopping mad. It still pisses me off when I think about it. I should have had a talk with the chief. I probably will next time I see him.
