Thought I'd post a little follow up on the first road trip in the new truck.
Had to go from S.E. KS to Rochester, MN. Have a bit more than 1200 miles on the truck now and suffice it to say, I'm one happy camper.
A few items:
Performance: Acceleration is STRONG. Absolutely no problems merging onto the interstates. Braking is just as good. Turning radius is much tighter than my '06 F-350 was. Don't know if it's a F-450 thing or if Ford has improved the steering geometry on all of the SuperDuty trucks, but it sure came in handy when parking. Ride was unbelievably smooth for a truck this size.
Mileage: We got 16.4 mpg going up (bit of a head/cross wind) and 17.3 mpg coming home (slight tailwind for about 3/4 of trip home). I'm guessing that in calm driving it would settle in around 16.8 mpg. Not bad for a 400 hp, 800 ft.lb. torque vehicle weighing in around 8600 lbs. with people and gear.
Comfort: Seats are unbelievably comfortable. Wife and son both commented on how comfortable they were. I have diabetic neuropathy and usually have difficulty riding for more than an hour or so. We made the trip straight home with only one gas stop and one meal stop and I had no difficulties whatsoever. Tons of leg, hip, and head room. I'm 6'6", 320 lbs. and had plenty of space for my frame.
Amenities: On board navigation worked flawlessly (I think). It did route us a strange way through Kansas City but we did see several detour route signs so maybe it knew something we didn't. Individual driver/passenger heat/air controls are great as is the pass-through console heat/air for the rear seat passengers. The Sony stereo system is just amazing if you enjoy music. Too many other electronics gadgets to describe, but it does just about anything you could want it to.
Obviously, at this date I can't attest much to reliability but for now, I'm in love with this truck. Son called his wife when we got to Rochester and told her he'd sell all of his other vehicles if she'd let him buy a truck like this. Don't think he's got her talked into it (yet).
That's about it for now. If anyone's looking at a truck like this and you have any specific questions, ask and I'll try to answer them.
