Question about Arctic Fox battery wiring

It's a 2008 Arctic Fox 1140 model - previously owned. (I'm 2nd owner)
The camper has two 12-volt batteries connected in parallel.

I found that there are THREE red wires.
Two very thick red wires are connected to the positive post.
The smaller, approximately 8 gauge wire, is not connected!

The smaller wire has a terminal lug on it with a single layer black electrical tape over the lug.

I'm guessing that someone removed the small wire, taped the terminal lug temporarily and forgot to put it back on.

Does anyone know what the small red wire purpose is?
  • Thanks to you all.
No worries then. I will label the wire accordingly.
And yes, there is a sticker above the sink area indicating pre-wired for solar.
  • You are correct. AF's are pre-wired for solar at the box and left disconnected. I just replaced an 1150, which replaced 1140. The other end will terminate above your sink where you'll see a little sticker that should say something to the effect of "prewired for solar" which is where the controller would go.
  • Ya I'd guess solar prewire-I wouldnt connect without finding other end in any case. Simple continuity check between the wires if as mentioned behind radio.

Sounds like its the #10 solar conductor. If you remove your radio you could verify this, as this is where the location for a solar controller would be located.

In back of the radio there should be four #10 conductors, two from the roof and two to the battery compartment.

    Good luck

  • I have 2 2012 Wolf Creek by Northwood. I also have dual batteries. There is heavy red wires going to the battery and they support the main power for the camper. There are two additional red wires probably #8 wire. One comes from the Solar panel and one is an additional hot wire which I used to powered the radio which I installed. Both the solar panel and the radio were stubbed out although neither had been installed at the factory.
