Question on AWD Suburban 1500

Hey Guys!

Looking for some real life experience or opinions on a vehicle. At the end of the summer we sold our TT and Tow Vehicle thinking we would take a little break from camping as the kids are becoming busy w/ Sports. As it turns out I think my kids are really going to miss it.
I currently have an 04 Suburban 1500 5.3, 3.73 with the AWD option. Not the auto 4wd but the Borg Warner (BW) model 4482 NR4 transfer case is a two-speed, full time 4WD, transfer case. Similar to the Denali.

I know this isnt ideal for towing and we're limited as to what type of trailer we can buy but I am trying to do this the right way. I have no plans of upgrading the Suburban as it's in great shape w/ low miles.

Anybody have evperience towing with this GM AWD system. Is it even advisable?

Appreciate it!
  • GM uses the same AWD system (with stronger axles) mated to the 6.2L in the 2007+ Yukon Denali and Escalade. There should be no concern because of the AWD.

That said, load up the family, weigh it to find out how much payload is left for trailer tongue weight. That's usually the limit for half tons, large families, and RVing.

If you have the OEM round tube receiver still, I highly recommend replacing it for about $200. There were many reported failures under the receiver limits when it was new, let alone 10 years later.
  • I have the AWD system in my truck. I have towed with it for the last six years. Everything from a small utility trailer to my TT (about 6,000 lbs) with no issues. I do have the 6.0 liter so I have a bit more power than the 5.3. I would not be afraid of towing with your suburban.
  • Hey Guys!

Thanks or the feedback so far! I ended up selling the dodge to meet the needs of our expanding family.

So no issues to note towing with GM's AWD set up?
  • Should tow fine as long as you do not expect to load the family in the Burb and then attempt to tow a large trailer. The 1500 series Suburban is very close to it's limits as is without adding a trailer to the mix.
  • No reason not to use other than the fact the transmission is not real strong- the 5.3 and 3.73 gearing is okay but also not great.

On the other hand, if it is just for a few trips a year and not real far- I agree with you. Keep the sub, take it easy on her, and just take your time.

By the way- Why not use your Dodge?
