Question re: Pop up Truck Camper

I am asking this for a horse trail riding friend. She would like a small camper with a canvas pop up to fit on her pickup. Could you suggest some brands to consider. I have seen some at campgrounds but don't have a name.

Thanks in advance
  • We can't give useful answers until we know what Ms. Horse-Person has to work with. Maybe she's got a big honkin' dually. Maybe she's got an old Tacoma.
  • Methinks Joe may know a thing or two about truck loads and weight given the list of equipment in his signature,

I have a Northstar 850SC and love it. Cassette toilet that I can dump most anywhere, low profile, a couple minutes to set up. I have an F-350 6.7L, pull a boat and it feels like the camper isn't even there, including while traveling up in the mountains of Colorado.
  • for us, a north/south bed was a no compromise issue.that narrowed the field considerably.
  • If your friend wants lightweight but better than sleeping in a tent on the ground the QuickSilver is a good choice. A friend has one and it rides below the cab height and is light enough that 3 strong people can slide it on an off onto a stand.
  • If she has an F150/1500/Tundra type truck, and tows a horse trailer, game over.

Most of them all by themselves are more than a load for that size truck. Add in several hundred pounds of tongue weight from the trailer and it's just not going to be a fun experience for anyone. Probably nothing bad will happen. Probably.
  • I just purchased a Palomino Backpack SS-1240 that I really like. It was one of the most economical models I could find that had the things that I wanted. They have several styles and floor plans. Might be worth looking at.
  • Would get better answers if we knew what truck she had and how big of a trailer she pulls.

A cheap no thrills model not mentioned is Palomino. If maintained, they will last.
