Power Wagons have maintained a 8510 GVWR since their return to production in 2005. My 2006 quad cab automatic transmission has a 2167 payload rating, while a 2006 regular cab with an manual transmission has a 2440 payload rating. The quad cab/auto combination is heavier than the regular cab/manual combination and therefore has a reduced payload rating. The 4th generation went to a larger and heavier crew cab versus the previous quad cab and therefore payload was once again reduced. With the introduction of 6.4L/66RFE automatic combination replacing the previous 5.7L/545RFE automatic combination, the truck again became heavier and the payload rating of Power Wagons dropped to the current 1480. You do realize 1500 is 3/4 ton right? Granted, it is lower than current ratings on other 2500s which are rated in the ton to ton and a half range. It's all relative I guess. 1500 payload is still a lot. I guess as Americans' average weight grows to over 200lbs a piece and people want to haul 4 or 5 adults in a truck, they want that 1000lb payload canceled out and still cary 1500-2000 lbs of payload in the back.

The original one did, I'de assume they didn't get rid of that feature on a rock truck!

It's a purpose built truck with the use case of extreme off-roading. It's not a desert pre-runner style like the raptor, but meant for slower more technical courses like Moab. To tackle those environments, it needs a softer suspension along with greater axle articulation. Both of these needs run contrary to what helps make a good tow vehicle.
