Registration for medium/heavy truck

Help!
I would like to purchase a class 6 or higher commercial truck as a tow vehicle. Can anyone, particularly from Michigan, give me advice on how to register that size truck? So far, it looks as if it needs to be registered commercial which then requires commercial insurance and all the goes with it. Anyone with any information please respond! Thanks
  • What was the process to test for a non CDL class A? How was the written and what did you use for the road test?

Do not know about Michigan specifically, but generally one can avoid the commercial aspect by registering as an RV. Our Volvo for example is registered as a motor home in IL.

Many states also have non-CDL operators licenses based on weight. I carry an IL non-CDL class A which states: "All single and combination vehicles except cycles"
  • One thing you will want to make sure of, even if it is registered personal, you may still have to pay tonnage on the truck. So make sure the PAID for tonnage is greater than what you will weight. Otherwise, not matter the other "state" if you will that you drive thru, including Michigan, you may find yourself "OVER WEIGHT" per the LEO that pulls you over, assuming you get weighed in some shape or form.

you need to contact your DOT and ask. Most states have special rules on PRIVATELY owned not for hire vehicles. In AZ my F350 has to run commercial plates but that is due to weight. Normal DL and veh insurance.

Calif and a few others may have rules due to other factors, but only your DOT will know for sure.

Same here in CT with my Ram 3500 DRW max GVWR for combination tags is 12.5k. At 14k it's $140 a year vs $205 2 yrs for my old Ford.
  • You definitely do not want it registered commercial. That means you'll be stopping at weigh stations.

In WA I had to find a clerk who knew what she was doing.. and then it took almost an hour. I was thinking registration would be easy, and insurance hard. It was just the opposite.
