Roof mounted (TV) bike rack

Is there any reason to not have a roof mounted bike rack so that we can take the kids' bikes camping with us?

I've looked at the one that mounts above the propane tanks but not only is it pricey, it takes precious tongue weight.

I can't seem to find a rack that mounts to the front of a Yukon XL so I thought that since we already have the crossbars up there wear as well put the kids' bikes there.

Dh is fairly tall so while getting them off and on wont be easy, it's doable.

The bikes don't fit well in the truck, nor the TT since we have an outside kitchen instead of a rear cargo hatch.

Is there something I don't know? Any strong reasons that a roof bike rack is a poor idea?

I've got a Yakima for on top of my Jeep Libby. I'm tall, too, but found a 2 foot high step ladder essential anyway. It's one thing to hold a heavy bike overhead, and another thing entirely to slide the tires into their holes doing it. Other than that, it works great.

I've had Yakima crossbars on my old Explorer, Subaru, K-cars, and now F-150 for our canoe. No reason not to put a bike on top other than the hassle of getting it on or off.

Won't a Curt front hitch fit the Yukon?

I had a Yakima roof rack on top of a grand Cherokee and Durango for 7-8 years. They work great. Do cost a bit...plan on about 300-500, but it is the best way to transport bikes IMO
