Roof Repair Advice Needed

Hi, I brought my TT into a repair shop for a few things, including some small tears to the roof. The repair shop told me the roof was in terrible shape and would cost $1,000 to repair. While they explained what he would do, I could not understand what the issue was to cause all that work to be done. Anyway, I did not have the money to repair it.

Quick background. I bought the 2009 TT in 2011. The roof has always been dirty, but I have cleaned it and used a protectant a few times. It never cleaned up totally white, but it did clean.

So I have two questions.
1. The tears are small. Can I use roof tape to seal them?
2. How can I determine if I need to put a whole new coating on the roof? I was watching a few videos on it and it does not seem too difficult. But how do I know if it is necessary?

Thank you very much.

I hope the second name, with a "t" is the right one.

when I had a small, quarter sized hole in my bounder roof I got a patch/repair kit from camping world that consisted of some EPDM material that had stickum on one side and a tube of caulk for the edges after I had applied the patch. seemed to me to be better than sticking scotch tape on it.

I was looking over my old roof coating post and found this link for Eternabond.

Eternabond

They sell a 2" wide and a 4" wide roll that is 50' long. The 4"X50' is $50. You can also get 18" and 36" wide X 50' long (very expensive) that cover 75 and 150 square feet respectively!

Check the internet and Amazon.com for eternabond tape. You can buy it in 3" and 4" wide, I think 50' long. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol or whatever is recommended on the roll of tape. Then carefully apply, taking off the backing as you go. Once it gets on the roof, it will not move- even a tiny amount.

If you really need to coat the entire roof, this is what I applied tonight.

You can put the Eternabond over all the roof seams, and then not worry about it leaking for several years. Just make sure that you clean it well, because if there is a layer of dirt, then it will stick to the dirt instead of the roof.

Good luck!

Most large RV dealers sell sicknbond tape. Comes in different sizes. The 6 inch wide is about $2 a ft. Small cracks use Dicor self leveling for roof. About $10 a tube. Clean with mineral spirits first and let dry. I just did my roof. Sun and hot weather is hard on RV roofs even if fairly new. Good idea to check the roof couple of times a year.

yes there are tapes to cover areas that are bad....just start searching the web and go to a camping store.

like the person said above, $1K is tooo little to replace the whole roof.

and after the taping you can use some of the products to reseal the whole rood.

Thanks to you both for those responses.

I have walked on the roof many times and I don't believe there are soft spots that would indicate dry rot.

And yes, these are a few quarter size holes in back right area. I am thinking I got too close to the branches of a tree when I was pulling it in and out of my backyard. As I indicated, I have spent a good amount of time on the roof and these are the 1st tears I have seen.

I appreciate the help.

$1000 is an odd amount of money. It's too little to cover replacement but it's way too much for a re-seal. What exactly are they going to do?
Also, what are these cracks from? Are they just age related or did something snag the roof? If there's just a few of them from something hitting the roof then I would just use some Eternabond Tape to fix them.

Can you provide pictures?

Is the roof soft (ie" rotted wood)?

If it is structurally sound, maybe, some eternabond could do the job.
