Route to Big Bear

We are going to join family in Big Bear for Thanksgiving. I have been trying to figure out the best route. We have a 35' class A and will be pulling a toad.
Most people are telling me to take Route 38 through Redlands. I was thinking Route 18 through Lucerne Valley, but someone told me there are two switchbacks I may not clear.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  • Thank you all for the advice. We will use 38 thru Redlands. Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
  • Through Redlands is the right way to go. You actually end up going downhill into Big Bear at the end. It is a relatively easy mountain drive. Other routes have too many curves for comfort. I've driven them all, but have only towed on 38. My buddy took his Class A on Hwy. 330, but he was not towing and did not like the experience too much. A lot of sawing at the wheel...

    Have a great Thanksgiving!
  • Use Hwy 38...check with CalTrans before going and carry chains....If there's a chance of snow they will stop you at the bottom and check to see if you have them whether or not you intend to USE them.....Dennis
  • Backside 18 Lucerne Valley.........35' MH with toad not the route I would want to use to get to Big Bear

Not only are the switchbacks tight but they are tight and steep.
Have seen MHs on road coming down...but haven't encountered one going up

This is signage at summit just north of Big Bear City before heading down into Lucerne Valley

  • We always take the 38. It's a little longer but a much nicer drive and less traffic.
