Sally the Shasta Oasis 18BH

I gave first glimpse of our rights over on the pixel thread. This question was posed and I thought it a good idea to start a thread about our rights and what was do to it. I am a member of other forums that have build threads (I am a model railroader too), thus the inspiration for starting this.

Are you enjoying this particular camper? The reason I ask is we are looking at the exact model.

We really are happy with it. However, there are a few things we don't like (all can be easily remedied) no TP holder, no towel rack. I had to get creative in my mounting of these because the bathroom wall is super flimsy. No paper towel holder, this was an easy install. The bed is really firm. We are going to get a 2 or 3 inch topper. No grill included - our old PUP had a hang on the side unit that we grew to love. No bathroom mirror.

Things that we love - virtually no setup time. We do a lot of cross country and coming from a PUP with 30 to 40 minutes setup and same for teardown, we are at about 5-10 with this. Hot water! Clean shower, clean bathroom. No more traipsing across the CG to use the facilities. Space for the kids to have separate beds. Gobs of storage space (and enough extra carrying capacity to actually use it). It tows really nicely.

Methinks I'm going to start a My Rig thread with everything we do to upgrade it. We do have a list of other niceties that we want to add just to make it more "ours"
Electric water heater add-on, electric space heater, electronic thermostat for propane heater. Privacy curtains for the bunks.

Another note, we looked at similar models from other manufacturers (KZ, Keystone, Gulf Stream, and Wolf PUP by Forest river). We preferred the build quality on this one over some of the others, and also appreciate the wider body over the narrower ones.

Iron, if you want a 22 foot TT without a sink in the bathroom, you can purchase one. By the way where are the ladies in your family going to do their hair, make up etc.? Poster asked for opinions and I gave her my opinion....GVWR too heavy for a single axel and wouldn't buy w/o sink in bathroom.

Makeup whilst camping?!?
That's a new one fer me although I do see the tweener girls (from tents and RVs) dolling it up in the bathrooms before wandering en-mass to the playground so they can huddle on the opposite side of the space from the boyz waiting to be men:B.

When camping all I care about is that I'm clean, neat, and stung free. No time for much in the way of frou frou cuz that's for "citay" living and I can play that part too;).
This is MY opinion and am guessing some other women will have their thoughts as well:).

As for amount of sinks...this is a 1st world issue that holds little bearing for me. Wherever the sink is you BETTER wash your hands after using the toilet.

Thanks for the great write up. It's very informative for me. How willing to deal was your dealership? I'm seeing prices kind of all over the place with basically the same options.

I'm glad it's helpful to you. We got ours for about 11,700. They have the same model on their lot again, currently priced at 12,747.

Admittedly, this is my first TT, only having a PUP before. I don't understand why you say the GVRW is too heavy for a single axle? GVWR of 4800 doesn't mean I'll actually load it up that heavy. Empty weight is only 3200. does it matter the GVWR if you're never close to it? Just because we *can* put that much cargo/water in it doesn't mean we will.

The very first mod that happened on our Oasis was the upgrade to dual propane bottles. I had the dealer swap out my double setup off our PUP when we traded it in. Obviously since the dealer did the swap for me I don't have pix of the job getting done but they even threw in a fancy plastic cover for me. I had used something similar to the "Flame King (KT20MNT) Dual RV Propane Cylinder Rack".

To the OP,
What other campers did you look at? We are only look at the full 8 foot wide models and this one and the Starcraft AR One Maxx keep coming up mainly due to the larger holding tanks and quality of build. I haven't been inside the Shasta yet but I really liked the Starcraft. But the Shasta is a fair amount less expensive.

Also, does the queen bed lift up for any storage? What about the bottom bunk?

Thanks for any info you could provide. It's in my opinion a sweet looking camper.

Online we looked at a handful, but quickly realized we wanted an 8-foot wide model. so that scrubs out a lot of these smaller bunkhouse models (Forest River Wolf Pup, Sonoma 167BH, etc). Also browsed Keystone's units (Hideout 175LHS, etc). Couple nice features of theirs is that they have a hanging wardrobe by the queen bed and a sink in the bathroom. Also under-bunk storage accessible from the outside. but there were none anywhere near me to look at in person. Also, WAAAY higher hitch weight, almost 500 lbs, our TV only allows 450.
KZ's mini bunkhouse build was beautiful but, narrow body, and basically a 2-person dinette (30"). no thanks. Liked the fact they have the bigger fridge in theirs, and it's raised off the floor. Their water cap's are tiny tiny tiny.
In person, at the dealer we ended up buying from, we looked at the Oasis, Gulf Stream Amerilite and one other, which was apparently quite forgettable. We also looked at the AR at a different dealer. Gulf stream's build quality didn't meet our expectations.

The StarCraft was heavier, and my wife preferred the 3-burner stove in the Oasis. Also from what I can tell the storage in the Oasis unbeatable. the kids have cubbies for their lovies and some other toys in their bunks, there's storage under the lower bunk, although not accessible from outside. There's a wide cabinet in the bath that reaches 70% the width of the trailer, divided vertically with a shelf. Extra storage under the (short) Queen bed, a big pantry (although it's only got one shelf, is narrow but deep), storage under the forward facing dinette seat, nice big overheads. The floor plan and overall design just works for us.

Lwiddis, obviously small trailers aren't for everyone! We have a 17' for my wife and I. Similar....single axLE, no bathroom sink.....we love it! I shave in the shower (I know, the horror of it all!), and we use the kitchen sink or the tub faucet for washing our hands. Hey, it's camping, not a 5-star hotel!

Sally is a cutie and it looks like 4 fit in it nicely.
I suspect you'll get used to her quirks and probably think them out as time goes on:).
