Should I just forget it?

Have a 2001 GMC Duramax 3/4 ton SLE with 45,000. Bought it new.

Beast (truck) pulls 30' fiver from OR to AZ last couple years only. Would like to travel throughout country and was thinking of simple cost effective upgrades for bit more hp.

Truck has been trouble free!!!, great ride with awesome mileage and is QUIET.

Feedback is most welcome!

Thanks again.
  • If you are happy with how it is towing now, why would you want to mess with it? In making the decision, I would ask myself what I'm hoping to gain by increasing the HP over what I have now and how what I have now is lacking. If I'm having trouble merging due to acceleration or other drivability issues due to limited power, then I would consider it.
  • my dad always told me "if it's not broke don't mess with it". i was 50 years old before i figured out these simple words mean.

now i have a 25 year old son and tell him the same thing. so far he doesn't get it either. hope he catches on sooner than i did.

bottom line, enjoy your truck and save your cash for other things you want.
  • Inspect your hoses, belts and brakes and you are good to go.
Don't let any slowing bother you... it is normal and only adds a few minutes to the drive.
  • I agree I'd leave it alone. Mine is stock as well and the only thing I've thought about adding is a lift pump and secondary fuel filter. However this is for reliability and longevity of other components not for power.
  • Give it a wash/wax job and a complete detail on the interior - you'll fall in love with it again.
  • You don't know what you got till it's gone....... Keep it. :)
  • What problem are you trying to fix?

I agree with the others, do nothing and just enjoy the ride.
  • I would keep it stock and save up for injectors. If they haven't been replaced, odds say they will be around or before 100K.

You going to have to save a lot because the job is around 4 to 5K. :E

BTW, a tune is harder on the old style injectors and tends to finish them off sooner.
  • Keep it - such low mileage.

If you upgrade go to a 2012 or newer. 2011 model is having more emissions issues.

    Some additions

    Bilstein shocks (OEMs are shot)
    Isspro gauges (boost and pyro)
Luverrne SS running boards - great running boards
Allison deep pan (runs cooler and TranSynd fluid change)
    PML diff. cover
Silverline 4" T304 SS CAT back exhaust - will run cooler and sound better
    LT265/75R16 tires (3400 lb capacity)
Air Lift air bags (take the sag out of the truck)

    I added all of these to a 2004 3/4 ton I owned.

Would not add a tuner without a tranny upgrade.
