Side-Trip Report: Great Salt Plains SP, OK

We spent a few days at one of Oklahomaโ€™s hidden gem state parks. Great Salt Plains, near Jet, in Alfalfa County OK. Waaaay out of the way, but definitely worth the trip.

The reservoir was created by a dam on the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River, completed in 1941. It has an interesting three-level spillway.

A Western Soapberry tree, native to OK, near our campsite. Iโ€™d never seen one bearing fruit, so I took a picture. I assume thereโ€™s a reason theyโ€™re called soapberries, so I didnโ€™t taste them.

Selina catching some rays, and using her toy basket as a pillow.

Our campsite. A beautiful spot.

We drove down to the spillway parking area to look around.

The lakeโ€™s average depth is about four feet. There are salt flats on the other side of the lake, where a unique type of selenite crystal can be found.

The salt flats area is reachable by vehicle, though itโ€™s about a 15 mile drive from the campground.

The approach road to the flats. We were told to not get off the road. There is the possibility of quicksand under a thin, stable looking crust.

Parking area ahead.

The digging area is outlined by posts. They move it around periodically so the crystals can grow undisturbed for a while.

The results of about an hour of digging.

An example of the most desirable crystals. The hourglass shaped inclusions are unique to this area. The clusters are also desirable. None of the crystals we found are quite as nice as these, but we had a good time nonetheless.

If you find yourself crossing OK on US-412, consider taking US-64 to the north instead, and see something new!

Oh yeah, they still use it! LOL

When we first got there, I noticed that there were a lot of airplanes flying around. The sun was behind the first handful or so, and all I see is the silhouette, but itโ€™s one that I recognize. โ€œCrop dustersโ€ I said to myself. After several hours of hearing them, and occasionally looking at them, I realize they arenโ€™t yellow, but gray.

Until, then, Iโ€™m thinking โ€œThatโ€™s a bunch of crop dusting going on!โ€ I finally realized they are all AT-6 Texan trainers, which are closely related to the Air Tractor AT-802 crop dusters. :B

Just a guess on my part, but that may have been some COVID related thing. I think we had to make our reservation online, but other than that it was business as usual.

We've stayed over nite below the dam on trips from NE OK to southern CO /northern NM years back.
Neat area.
Vance Air Force base uses Kegelman aux field just south of the below dam campgrounds. The field is used as a touch and go for training AF fighter pilots from Vance. If you plan on a extended stay Vance did have a phone number to call and see what time of the day they would be using the air field. I assume they still use the field.

Another recreation area is the Little Sahara state park with lots of sand for those type vehicles. Its just a few miles southwest of Salt Plains Park next to small town Waynoka, OK just north of US 412.
Maybe some day US 412 will make a east/west interstate between I-40 and I-70.

The Highway 412 you were on is just about the longest straight run in America. One section is 47.7 miles and is arrow straight, and the 2nd section is 65.5 miles of arrow straight miles.

The tiny town you mentioned, Kenton, is one of the USA's best Dark Sky astronomy viewing areas, as there is just nothing really out there. You can google Okie Tex Star Party dot com, and see how people come from all across the USA as well as Canada and sometimes from other Continents. If you are an amateur astronomer, this place should be on your short list.

Thanks to all who take the time to read!

I have to confess, I was born and raised in OK, and lived more than half my life there till work took me to other nice places, but I donโ€™t recall ever even hearing about the Great Salt Plains. My son told me he recalls going on a Scout camp-out there, but Iโ€™ve slept since then, so like a lot of other thingsโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ.poof. :Z

Hereโ€™s a few other fun facts about OK:

The highest mountain in OK is in the Kiamichi range, way down in the southeastern part of the state. The Kiamichis, like all the mountain ranges in the Midwest, are ancient. They were as high as the Rockies at one time. The highest peaks reach 2500โ€™ elevation, but they are not the highest points in the state.

The highest point in OK is 4973โ€™ at Black Mesa, which is in the farthest northwestern tip of the panhandle very close to the CO state line. It has no distinct peak, and doesnโ€™t even look like youโ€™re at a high elevation. There is a marker there, though. Itโ€™s within a nature preserve, and can be reached on foot. The closest town is Kenton (pop. 17), and though OK is officially in the Central time zone, Kenton unofficially observes Mountain time due to its closeness to NM. Black Mesa SP is nearby, and has camping facilities.
