Silverado 3500HD 2013 vs 2014

It sounds like the changes to the diesel this year MAY be mostly cosmetic. Are we better off with a leftover 2013 or waiting for the new 2014. The major change coming is in 2015. We had planned on stalling for the new 2015, but are now wondering. We are afraid that the truck bed height increase will create issues with keeping the rig level. Anyone have any information?

Hall GMC in Tyler Tx has a talk radio show on saturday mornings and said the 2014 D/A will be 420hp but didnt say torgue. My 2012 is 397hp,might be a big deal if your pulling a 38 to 40 footer.
I'd buy the 13 and spend the savings on fuel and campgrounds.

The 2014 Order Guide indicates that the 2014 Duramax is still 397 hp.

I would either wait for the 2015 GM or buy a Ford or Ram if I didn't want to wait.
  • My 2011 Duramax has had 2 issues both easily fixed by the dlr and 1 of them was a def issue. Now at 50k mi and going great.
  • The big changes actually will come in 2017 with the new federal regulations. With the new engines there is a good chance that there will be increased maintenance costs and there will definitely be new motor oils for them. The motor oil companies are working hard to develop the new oils which will need to not shear with the tighter tolerances of the new engines which make for a thinner film of oil.

The emissions changes have been difficult for the auto makers to meet without reliability problems. Buying the first model year as with the 2011 Duramax and the 2013 Ram diesel is a high risk proposition with problems with wiring, with heat shielding, with NOx sensors, DEF sensors, and programming shortcomings. The trucks are more reliable overall than their predecessors but when a problem does develop they are much more difficult for the dealers' mechanics to accurately diagnose and fix.

And they probably have two on the lot. And yOu can choose your color as long as its white... LOL
  • i rarely see big price breaks on the HD like you do on the 1500s. Especially true for diesels.

I never like the buy the first year of a major re-design and typically wait a year or two for any bugs to get worked out and prices to drop a bit. Dealers are not going to move much on prices when the new design rolls out.

  • I would wait for a 2015 or get a 2014 next year when the 2015's arrive. I'll bet you will save at least 10k on a 2014 when the 15's hit the lot.
  • There is no 2014 Extended Cab. There are 4 less colors on 2014's. Expect the 2015's will have early launch.
