We always do the light check before pulling out.. Even do that with the little utility trailer.. Just habit..
But, since the damage is done, if you feel like doing the work yourself, and have the proper crimping tools and are not color blind, you should be able to do it your self..
I'd go all the way back to the "junction box" where the original one connected to and just get a new one and swap it out.
If it's all under the covered underbelly thing, then you have some more work to do..
