Spare tire cover

I always remove my spare tire cover when not traveling. Given the humid climate here (east of Houston) humidity is my biggest concern for the life of my spare. With the cover on it holds moisture in as well as will mildew the cover. So I expose the spare to the sun as opposed to excess moisture. I have a nice Houston Texans cover (go Texans!) but also have the one that came with the TT. Am I mistaken with my logic with the moisture and sun? Just want to do what is best to get max life from the spare.
  • Thanks for the feedback. I'll put the original dealer cover on, and use the other when I travel.
  • Sun and ozone is the enemy, not humidity.

I have found that the putting a plastic bag over the tire and then the cover works best. It stops the typically white cover from staining.
  • "So I expose the spare to the sun as opposed to excess moisture""

My first hearing of this rational...sun better than moisture. I pick protection from....sun.
  • Either keep it covered, or store it, protect it from UV with Aerospace 303.
  • The sun will eat up the tire before anything else. Keep it covered!
  • Interesting theory, never heard this before. I don't do either, instead store my spare in the trailer's front pass through storage compartment where it's always protected from the elements.
