Here's a bit of a twist if you will on this topic. On another forum, a poster states how he is getting a toy-hauler w/a dry GVW of 16K and max GVW of 20K. Has a '03 F350 SRW w/ 7.3 with things being modded. Most of the replies are telling him he should be looking at a dually, but he insists the '03 will do just fine and is even considering making it into a DRW (states the frame is same for SRW/DRW for year). Ford says max 5er wt is 12,700 for that year. Don't know about ya all, I'm heading' in opposite direction.

Sizes based on 2019 Ram 3500... Picked three random tires, from different brands.

TireRack - General Grabber A/TX - LT285/60R20 - $309.99/ea - $1,239.96/set
TireRack - General Grabber A/TX - LT275/70R18 - $223.99/ea - $895.96/set
TireRack - General Grabber A/TX - LT235/80R17 - $172.99/ea - $1,037.94/set

TireRack - BFG AT2 - LT285/60R20 - $393.99/ea - $1,575.96/set
TireRack - BFG AT2 - LT285/60R20 - $252.99/ea - $1,011.96/set
TireRack - BFG AT2 - LT235/80R17 - $197.99/ea - $1,187.94/set

TireRack - Michelin Agilis Crossclimate - LT285/60R20 - $319.99/ea - $1,279.96/set
TireRack - Michelin Agilis Crossclimate - LT275/70R18 - $254.99/ea - $1,019.96/set
TireRack - Michelin Agilis Crossclimate - LT235/80R17 - $254.99/ea - $1,529.94/set

For two of the three, it's cheaper to replace tires on the DRW.

I added the LT275/70R18 to your list. It re-enforces why I bought a truck with 18" vs 20" Rims.

And:
TireRack - Michelin Defender LTX M/S LT275/70R18 - $254.99 - $1,019.96/set

The tires that come on a RAM DRW are different than the 18-20โ€ tires on their SRW trucks.

Does it? I paid $1,278 out the door for top quality Michelins. What does a top their modern 18 or 20" set cost?

Sounds about the same depending on where you go and what you buy. I just put on a set of Falken Wildpeaks a couple of weeks ago to give them a shot and they were a little less than that, I think around $1100. Stock size, 275/70R18. I was planning on installing the new DT version of BFG KO2 or Cooper's ST Maxx before I got turned onto the Falken's by a poster here and I think those were both right around $1300 installed.

We bought a dually because we wanted the best tow vehicle and have never thought it wasn't the best decision for us. Two tires on the rear cannot beat four tires on the rear. Chevman

I was on the Ford build and price site and found it interesting that when I selected an f350 platinum the default vehicle was a dually. When I changed my selection to a SRW short box the price increased by $1510.

Except! if a tire blows out towing a trailer...SRW not better ๐Ÿ™‚

If itโ€™s a front tire you are still jacked up
tires

Towing a large fiver, the chances of a rear blow out are MUCH higher than a front.

Another pro for the dually is that you can run a much lower pressure in the rear tires even when towing heavy which contributes to a much better ride. And I love how cool the tires stay.
