Stove 1974 Shasta XL20

We are restoring a 1974 Shasta XL 20 gifted to us by my brother in law. It has been in a pole barn since 1977 and might have been used 10 times total. The stove, a Frigiking-Wedgewood has rust on the main top panel and the trim on left and right and bottom sides. The finish is Satin Crome/Crome. My husband has tried to sand it several times and painted it with high temp black paint, but unfortunately the rust comes back through. We took it to a powdercoating business yesterday, along with the vent a hood. He could do the hood, but we would have to have taken all the trim off the stove for him to sandblast/powdercoat those. What is your suggestion? I have the diagram and parts numbers for these parts. Is there anywhere to order these parts. Could my husband sand it down again and use Eastwood Ceramin Engine paint in an aluminum color as well as Eastwood activator to give it added durability and gloss? What would you do if you restoring this stove. We are trying our best to keep the trailer era 1974. Thanks, Vicki in TN
  • I painted my stove but it didn't have much rust.

For painting steel with rust this is my drill: wire brush as much rust off the surface as possible, treat the surface with dilute phosphoric acid (sometimes rubbing it in with a 3M pad). If the steel part is deemed priceless or if I want it to remain rust-free, I'll follow the acid treatment and rinse with the new rust reforming primers. If the rust was minor or the item isn't priceless, I use regular oil primer. The final step is to apply the finish coats.
