Thank goodness for insurance

Our son had his awning extended out on a sunny day here in WI and never expected to come home after work to a mangled mess. The gusts of wind tore the arms off. When he called a dealer, they told him to contact his insurance. Sure enough, it turns out it will be covered and all they have to pay is the deductible. We all have a Memorial Day trip planned and the dealer reassured him it would be ready before that. Before you give up when things happen, remember to contact your insurance and see if you are covered!

    Great news!

    And make sure your deductible is within reason. No one wants to pay the $1,000 deductible for a $1,200 repair, right?

    Had mixed results with awning claim. My insurance went up. The second time it happened years later I found that on with cash the awing and arms were only 1/3 the price (which so happened to be the same as my deductible. Make sure what a claim may do to your insurance when you renew and also see what it would cost cash.

    I never leave my awning out without being there for that reason. You never know what the weather will do.

    My dh didn't believe me about how the wind can mangle an awning. He would always roll his eyes when I would roll up the awning when we would leave. Then he saw an awning flip up over a TT.

    I hope your insurance won't go up.

    Ya, we never leave ours out either, but of course he is new at this and never asked or mentioned he was leaving it out or we would have discouraged it. The awning and other repairs are around $1500 and their deductible is $500 so it should be okay. Thanks for all the comments/advice.

    I hardly ever even put mine out. I did use it at a concert at the casino last year. It was a hot day, there was no shade, and it gave us all a place to set in the shade until the concert started. That's the only time in the last 5 years I was happy to have one, and about the 3rd time I even put it out. But, to each his own.

    I tie mine down, since I have been doing this a year there may be folks that advise that even that is not fool proof. I had pretty good gusts and they held well but in a very heavy windy day I may elect to keep the awning stored.

    My rule of thumb, I always use tie downs no matter what, I use the corkscrew and so far i have been okay. If you do leave for an extended period of time then I would retract it.
